{"id":582509,"date":"2026-08-04T02:54:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T02:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/582509\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T02:54:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T02:54:14","slug":"funeral-of-glen-hansard-to-take-place-in-dublin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/582509\/","title":{"rendered":"Funeral of Glen Hansard to take place in Dublin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The funeral of musician Glen Hansard will take place in Dublin this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The Oscar winner died last Wednesday at the age of 56 in a road crash, hours after taking part in a trad session at The Wren&#8217;s Nest pub.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/entertainment\/2026\/0803\/1586248-glen-hansard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">over 11,000 people attended a public wake for the singer-songwriter<\/a> at the Baroque Chapel at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Royal Hospital Kilmainham.<\/p>\n<p>His funeral will take place at St Patrick&#8217;s Cathedral in Dublin city centre at 1.30pm, and will be broadcast on the RT\u00c9 News channel.<\/p>\n<p>While the funeral will also be open to the public, access inside the cathedral will be limited given the numbers expected.<\/p>\n<p>Large screens will be showing the funeral at St Patrick&#8217;s Close.<\/p>\n<p>Music at the funeral will be provided by Mr Hansard&#8217;s friends and family.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Ballymun, Dublin, on 21 April 1970, Mr Hansard began performing music at a young age, busking on the streets of Dublin before co-founding The Frames in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>He also appeared in Alan Parker&#8217;s 1991 film The Commitments, playing guitarist Outspan Foster.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hansard and Ms Irglov\u00e1 won the Oscar for Best Original Song for Falling Slowly in 2008.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The funeral of musician Glen Hansard will take place in Dublin this afternoon.
