blaze at Glencullen reignited<\/a> and units from Dublin Fire Brigade were on the scene last night.\u00a0<\/p>\nMore than 25 firefighters and other agencies had fought a blaze in the area on 31 July, which was brought under control, and it\u2019s not yet known how the fire reignited.<\/p>\n
However, such fires can smoulder underground in peat rich ground and substantial rainfall is needed to thoroughly dampen the ground and vegetation.<\/p>\n
Smoke had been travelling from the south over Three Rock Mountain and into the suburbs of Dublin City last night.<\/p>\n
Firefighters from Rathfarnham and D\u00fan Laoghaire had tackled the gorse wildfire on the Dublin mountains.<\/p>\n
Fire crews withdrew just after midnight but at one point, there were four fire engines, a water tanker, and a wildfire jeep at the scene.<\/p>\n
Darren O\u2019Connor, district officer with the Dublin\u00a0Fire\u00a0Brigade, told RT\u00c9\u2019s Morning Ireland that the fire has \u201cdied down considerably\u201d and is currently \u201cbeing monitored by local landowner\u201d.<\/p>\n
He added that there was \u201csignificant change in wind direction and an increase in wind speed\u201d yesterday, which brought the fire uphill.<\/p>\n
He also remarked that a change in weather should help to \u201ceither eliminate or slow down the fire completely\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe ground is tinder dry,\u201d said O\u2019Connor, \u201cso it\u2019ll take a couple of days, maybe even a week of rain, to get the moisture levels back up from what they are.\u201d<\/p>\n
O\u2019Connor said the fire service doesn\u2019t yet know how the fire started.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt started a number of days ago, maybe over a week ago now.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t have an exact cause of it, but they generally start near pathways and roadways, but it\u2019s impossible at this stage to say what the source of this ignition was.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, O\u2019Connor remarked that this has been \u201cone of the busiest periods we\u2019ve experienced over the last number of years\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cAcross the country, you see what\u2019s been going on,\u201d said O\u2019Connor.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve dealt with a number of significant fires, along the borderline of Wicklow as well.<\/p>\n
