\n\tHaving boarded as the sales agent of Locarno Film Festival<\/a>\u2018s \u201cThe Green Eyes<\/a>,\u201d Kinology<\/a> has pre-sold \u201cThe Green Eyes\u201d to Benelux (Cinart), Switzerland (Filmcoopi), Turkey (Chantier) and the former Yugoslavia region (MCF).<\/p>\n

\n\tDistribution in France will be handled by Haut et Court, one of the film\u2019s producers. <\/p>\n

\n\tDirected by Fanny Liatard<\/a> and J\u00e9r\u00e9my Trouilh<\/a> \u2013 also known for \u201cGagarine<\/a>\u201d \u2013 the film will open this year\u2019s Locarno\u2019s Film Festival on Aug. 5, playing at Locarano\u2019s Piazza Grande.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFanny and J\u00e9r\u00e9my are among the most inspired and inspiring French filmmakers today, and Kinology couldn\u2019t be happier to be part of their magnificent comeback after the wonderful \u2018Gagarine\u2019,\u201d said its founder and CEO Gr\u00e9goire Melin, noting their \u201cunique blend of social and magical realism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film is produced by June Films and Haut et Court and co-produced by Les Films du Fleuve and Hobab.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn \u201cThe Green Eyes,\u201d Liatard and Trouilh follow little Chaya, who lives with her family in the Landes region in France. But when they learn they\u2019re being evicted, her older brother Nour falls into a mysterious sleep.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe first learned about \u2018resignation syndrome\u2019 five years ago, through a photography exhibition featuring two sisters affected by this condition,\u201d Liatard and Trouilh told\u00a0Variety.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThese little girls were sleeping side by side, locked in a deep sleep ever since their family\u2019s request for asylum had been denied. Those images deeply moved us. When we realized that hundreds of children had been affected by this condition, we wondered what these young children, trapped in their sleep, were dreaming about. That was the starting point for our desire to tell a story from a child\u2019s perspective and dive into the dreams of a little girl who will do everything she can to wake her big brother up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLiatard and Trouilh decided to answer\u00a0Variety\u2019s questions together.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe do everything together,\u201d they admitted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ve been working as a directing duo for over 10 years now, and we feel lucky to be able to share this journey together. We still don\u2019t divide up the work.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThorough research was important in order to address this disease in the film.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt truly exists, even if we then venture into the realms of fiction and magic. We met doctors who specialize in this disease and young people who have awakened from it, sometimes after several years of deep lethargy. These powerful testimonies conveyed to us the sheer strength of these children.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThey also inspired the resilience of Chaya and Nour\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn our story, Chaya never loses hope of saving her brother, and it is thanks to the love that binds them and the power of her imagination that she succeeds.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLiatard and Trouilh combined reality and fiction in their award-winning \u201cGagarine,\u201d<\/a> where a boy who wants to become an astronaut tries to save his home from demolition.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe love to explore reality without being realistic! Diving into the imagination and our characters\u2019 dreams allows us to explore their emotions in a very visual way.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIn \u201cThe Green Eyes,\u201d the Landes forest, where they filmed, is already \u201cmagical in itself.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s this lighthouse standing in the middle of the pine forest, and a little village covered in sand. It\u2019s a paradise for these children, but also the place where all their traumas are replayed,\u201d they said. They also praised Guillaume Laurant (\u201cAm\u00e9lie,\u201d \u201cI Lost My Body\u201d), who joined them as a screenwriter.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe shared some of the magic of his vision with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s always a major challenge for us to strike the right balance between realism and magical elements. On the one hand, it was important to ground the film in real everyday life, and the archive footage helps us connect with the reality of the syndrome. On the other hand, we wanted to delve into Chaya\u2019s imagination until the boundary between dream and reality gradually blurred.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThey enjoy focusing on younger protagonists who are not afraid to dream.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDreamers know no borders; they invent the worlds of their choice. These worlds are refugees, and when reality becomes too violent, they can serve as escape routes,\u201d they noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s true that children and teenagers often find it easier to immerse themselves in their imaginations.
