New statistics show that last month was one of the hottest, driest and sunniest months on record for Ireland.<\/p>\n
According to Met \u00c9ireann’s climate statement for last month, July 2026 was the second hottest July on record since 1900.<\/p>\n
It was also the third hottest month on record overall.<\/p>\n
The forecaster has said the month was dominated by high pressure, which resulted in a national mean July temperature of 17.25C.<\/p>\n
This has only ever been topped by the mean temperature for July 2013 of 17.34C.<\/p>\n

The forecaster said that the national mean temperature for this July of 17.25C is 2.4C above the 1961-1990 Long-Term Average and 1.87C above the 1991-2020 Long-Term Average (LTA).<\/p>\n

Rainfall of just 16mm – or 17% of the 1991-2020 LTA – was recorded.<\/p>\n
All monthly rainfall totals across the country were below their 1991-2020 LTA.<\/p>\n
Some of the key figures from Met \u00c9ireann\u2019s weather stations across the country show that Cork Airport had its driest, warmest, and sunniest month on record last month.<\/p>\n
Johnstown Castle in Co Wexford had its driest and sunniest month on record, and broke the national record for the sunniest month on record.<\/p>\n
Moore Park in Co Cork and Oak Park in Co Carlow had their driest and warmest month on record.<\/p>\n

Phoenix Park and Casement Aerodrome in Dublin had their warmest month on record and driest July on record, while Valentia Observatory in Co Kerry and Roches Point in Co Cork had their warmest July on record, with record lengths for both Phoenix Park and Valentia going back 127 years.<\/p>\n
Heatwave conditions<\/p>\n
Heatwaves were reported at seven of the forecaster\u2019s weather stations, which lasted between five and 13 days.<\/p>\n
Moore Park, with 13 days, had the second longest heatwave on record for Ireland, behind 14 days set in Birr, Co Offaly in August 1976.<\/p>\n
Met \u00c9ireann has said that from a climate change perspective, the average temperature in Birr during its 14-day heatwave in 1976 was 17.9C.<\/p>\n
This compares to the average temperature recorded in Moore Park during its 13-day heatwave last month of 20.4C, an increase of 2.5C.<\/p>\n
Met \u00c9ireann has said that Atlantic weather fronts were kept away to the north and west of the country for most of last month.<\/p>\n

This brought light rain and drizzle at times, especially to the West and North, but as the week progressed it got drier, warmer and sunnier.<\/p>\n “During the second week high pressure built over and then to the north of Ireland. It stayed mostly dry and vary warm or hot in most places. It also became sunnier in the west as the airflow became easterly.<\/p>\n “The third week saw the high pressure move to the west of Ireland changing the airflow to a more northerly direction. It stayed mostly dry but cooled down a bit over the northern half of the country with more cloud for the northwest.<\/p>\n “During the fourth week the high pressure pulled away to the southwest allowing an Atlantic westerly airflow to take hold.
