{"id":584352,"date":"2026-08-05T21:52:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T21:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/584352\/"},"modified":"2026-08-05T21:52:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T21:52:09","slug":"tributes-paid-to-girl-16-who-died-while-playing-football-match-in-wexford-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/584352\/","title":{"rendered":"Tributes paid to girl (16) who died while playing football match in Wexford \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wexford\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wexford\">Wexford<\/a> community is in shock after a 16-year-old girl collapsed on the pitch and died during a ladies football final on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The girl collapsed  in injury time of the football shield final, which was being played in Taghmon, not far from Wexford town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She has been named locally as Aoibheann Clarke. Her father was officiating as a linesman during the game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The  young girl was lining out with Taghmon-Camross GAA in the Girls Minor Division 6 Shield final when she suddenly collapsed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The girl was immediately attended to, with chest compressions performed for several minutes until an advanced paramedic arrived on the scene. An ambulance followed within five minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed and the fire services were also in attendance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A defibrillator was used several times on the girl before she was lifted into the back of an ambulance and brought to hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her mentors were reportedly unaware of any underlying medical conditions and described her as \u201ca really talented girl\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She was also well known in sporting circles as a gifted soccer player with All Blacks AFC and Wexford FC. Recently, she helped Wexford FC capture the FAI Women\u2019s under-19 Inter-League title, a source of great pride and celebration at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement, Taghmon-Camross LGFA said that the club was \u201cheartbroken\u201d by the tragic loss of their \u201ccherished member\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAt this incredibly difficult time, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who responded so quickly and compassionately to the emergency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOur thoughts and prayers remain with our player\u2019s family, friends, team-mates, coaches, and all who knew and loved her.
