The Dingle family<\/a> was left devastated in tonight’s episode of Emmerdale after saying goodbye to beloved family dog Monty<\/a>. Last night’s instalment saw Cain Dingle learn that Monty’s cancer had spread<\/a>, and he made the heart-wrenching decision to have him put down<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Monty had become more than just a pet to the Dingles, and instead was a much-loved family member.<\/p>\n

But to Cain, he was also a reminder of his late father, Zak<\/a>, and all the memories he shared with him, acting as one of the last things he had of his<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Saying goodbye to the beloved family pet, Belle said that Piper is going to “miss him something rotten”, saying “who is she meant to steal food off now?”<\/p>\n

She went on to say she “hates this” and it “isn’t fair” to have to lose Monty, while boyfriend Kammy Hadiq comforted her.<\/p>\n

Sam brought Monty over a bowl of water while he lay in his bed, petting him before Cain asked sons Kyle and Isaac if they would like to say goodbye before he had to take Monty to the vets.<\/p>\n

Kyle told his dad that he bid his farewells earlier, not wanting to “waste anyone’s time”, while Isaac showed Belle a picture he had drawn for Monty that he could have with him “when he goes” that heartbreakingly showed the pup surrounded by rainbows.<\/p>\n

Cain appeared overwhelmed with emotion looking at the picture, immediately saying he needed to take Monty to the vets.<\/p>\n

Belle said that the vet could come to their home, but Cain insisted he did not want the boys to see Monty put down as it would upset them.<\/p>\n

Sam handed over Monty’s lead to Cain, who walked the pooch out of the home for one last time, leaving the Dingle clan looking sombre.<\/p>\n

Arriving at the vets, Cain apologised to Rhona Goskirk for being late, explaining he wanted to walk over with Monty but he “wasn’t up to it” and he had to get the car.<\/p>\n

He asked if he was alright to stay with Monty through the procedure, which Rhona assured him he would be, saying he could hold him if he liked and all they needed to do was make it “as peaceful as possible” for the dog.<\/p>\n

Cain said that it would be the only one there for Monty, explaining that the family was cut up over his death, joking that “he didn’t know why as Monty was never a good boy”.<\/p>\n

“Wouldn’t even give us a paw, let alone anyone else,” he continued.<\/p>\n

Rhona comforted Cain, assuring him that this was the most humane thing to do, with Cain bravely asking them to “get it over with”.<\/p>\n

Cain asked Rhona if it would hurt, to which she said no, empathising that death is “always upsetting” and his feelings are understandable.<\/p>\n

She asked Cain if he wanted to say anything, with him responding he is just a dog, before Monty put his paw on his owner’s hand.<\/p>\n

“You took your time, didn’t you?” Cain laughed before receiving the injection. “You are a good boy. And Dad was always grateful for having you. When you get up there, you tell him how much we love him, and that we miss him loads. And you make sure he takes you for plenty of walks just like old times.”<\/p>\n

“We love you, you scruffy old thing,” he added through tears, telling Rhona he had gone. <\/p>\n

Back at Wishing Well Cottage, the family coped with the loss in different ways, with Isaac questioning if humans are put down if they’re in pain, further asking if the same could happen to Cain with his cancer.<\/p>\n

Lydia Dingle and Belle assured him he wouldn’t, while Kyle furiously asked why Isaac would say that, and further regretted that no one accompanied his dad to take Monty. <\/p>\n

Belle took Kyle and Isaac to the vets to meet Cain after they insisted, and he told them that Monty passed peacefully and didn’t feel anything.<\/p>\n

Isaac asked if Monty was coming with them, and Cain said of course, explaining to Rhona that they would not have the dog cremated and that “the Dingles bury their own”.<\/p>\n

Sam, Mandy, and Kammy met Cain, Isaac, and Kyle as they arrived back at home, ready to lay Monty to rest.<\/p>\n
