Cork County Council<\/a> for a 10-year planning permission to construct a 44-hectare solar farm, spread across 15 townlands between Ovens and Macroom.<\/p>\nThe ambitious solar project will cumulatively cover more than 34 inter-county GAA pitches’ worth of land.<\/p>\n
The proposed farm would be built across the townlands of Aglish, Coolnashamroge, Currahaly, Farnanes, Knockavullig, Knocknagoul, Knockshanawee, Loughleigh, Mahallagh, Nettleville Demesne, Rathonoane, Rooves Beg, Rooves More, Shandangan East, and Shandangan West.<\/p>\n
While the capacity of a solar farm varies slightly based on its layout and regional conditions, the 44-hectare farm is estimated to generate 27MW, enough to power over 6,100 homes.<\/p>\n
These estimates are based on figures provided by Solar Ireland for the Lysaghtstown Solar Farm in East Cork, which can power up to 29,700 homes at an energy capacity of 130MW.<\/p>\n
The proposed farm would consist of arrays of ground-mounted solar panels connected to five separate battery energy storage containers. Approval has been sought for the construction of three spare parts containers, four weather stations and a network of underground electrical ducts and cables.<\/p>\n
The application also outlines plans for the construction of security fencing, CCTV monitoring, and access tracks, landscaping and all other necessary site works.<\/p>\n
The solar panels have a planned lifespan of 40 years. Once they cease operation, companies are typically required to restore the land to its original state. Such obligations are often included as a key condition in any grant of planning permission.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, Aglish Solar Farm Limited was granted permission for a 161-hectare solar farm in the same part of Cork after an appeal to An Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la.<\/p>\n
The application was initially refused by Cork County Council after concerns were raised that the farm could adversely affect existing archaeological features.<\/p>\n
However, in May, this decision was overturned by An Coimisi\u00fan after an inspector concluded that the site’s archaeological assessment was satisfactory. Over 200 submissions were made to the council in respect of the project, and a further 69 were made to An Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la.<\/p>\n
This latest application covers many of the same townlands, and it’s understood that the proposed solar farm would be integrated into the larger solar project if approved.<\/p>\n
