“When my dad passed away, me mother and my sister were sorting out all his affairs to decide how much we would have to pay inheritance tax and all these kind of things, getting all his different investments together and everything else,” John Charlton said.<\/p>\n
“When they came to the medal, tax people here said that they were looking at around \u00a3200,000 for me to get the medal.<\/p>\n
“Now, either his estate could pay it, or I could pay it. But if it was given to me, it would really be coming from me. So we were like ‘hang on a minute, where do you get that figure from?’<\/p>\n
“And this went on backwards and forwards. And then there was a guy called Jeremy Armstrong, who’s a journalist for the Daily Mirror. He lives in the northeast, not far from me. He decided he was going to investigate to see what would happen.<\/p>\n
“So he spoke to the government, and they basically said it was nothing to do with them. He then spoke to the tax department, and they said it was nothing to do with them.<\/p>\n

“So basically, they were both saying that it was nothing to do with either of them, but we couldn’t get any answers.<\/p>\n
“Following on from that, the only thing we found out was that if I was to pay that \u00a3200,000, if I had it, then if I give the medal to my son, he would have to do the same, and then his son would have to do the same, and it would, so it would go on.<\/p>\n
“Five generations down the line would mean that we would have to pay the tax man about a million pounds.”<\/p>\n
The whole situation poses a problem for Big Jack’s surviving family who are determined to keep the winning medal within the family and have no intention of selling it on – even if Charlton’s former club, Leeds United, were to come in to buy it.<\/p>\n
“I have no intention of selling the medal,” John Charlton insisted.<\/p>\n
“If the tax department and the government were to say ‘look, if you sell the medal, then you’ve got to pay tax on it,’ not a problem, because I’m profiteering from the sale of that medal.<\/p>\n
“But me just to take possession of it and for \u00a3200,000 to be paid on my mother’s estate is something that I think is totally unreasonable, and everybody that’s heard about it, knows about it, totally agrees.”<\/p>\n
A rudimentary search into the prices previously fetched for medals belonging to Charlton’s former team-mates of 1966 show fees in the region of \u00a3100,000 to \u00a3200,000 paid for medals that had belonged to household names like Alan Ball, Nobby Stiles and Gordon Banks.<\/p>\n
“That baffles me,” John Chalrton said.<\/p>\n
“Obviously, we’ve never indicated or intimated to anybody that we wanted to sell it, and we’ve never had that thought.<\/p>\n
“It’s never crossed our minds. And it’s just trying to get some common sense out of the government or out of the tax department, whichever one.<\/p>\n
“Somebody said something that I thought was quite funny today – when the Queen died in England, did Prince Charles pay for the crown jewels?”<\/p>\n
