{"id":585034,"date":"2026-08-06T14:40:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T14:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/585034\/"},"modified":"2026-08-06T14:40:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T14:40:09","slug":"premier-sfc-ucc-withdraw-from-tie-with-carbery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/585034\/","title":{"rendered":"Premier SFC: UCC withdraw from tie with Carbery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">UCC\u2019s withdrawal from Sunday\u2019s McCarthy Insurance Group Premier SFC Divisional\/Colleges preliminary quarter-final against Carbery was confirmed on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The tie had been fixed for Ovens at 3pm, but UCC had been battling availability issues in recent days, and those pressures intensified on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Carbery advance to the championship proper for the first time since 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">UCC manager Johnny Clifford outlined the full range of challenges that left the college unable to field a team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe\u2019re in the exact same position as UCC hurlers were in for their game,\u201d he said to The Echo on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe hurlers were able to field. Picture: Eddie O&#8217;Hare<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe had challenges around club fixtures over the weekend, clashes with Kerry and Tipperary, and also the four man rule limiting who we can name. When you add in club commitments, it left us with no realistic way to field a proper panel. It was something as simple as that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Clifford stressed that UCC exhausted every possible avenue to fulfil the fixture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe tried our best. You\u2019re trying every player around UCC to try and play, but the numbers just weren\u2019t there. Every player was contacted, every option explored. It wasn\u2019t for lack of effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAlso, there are club U21 fixtures on at the weekend \u2014 another issue. On another weekend, with a different set of circumstances, we\u2019d have no problem fulfilling the fixture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s disappointing for everyone. It\u2019s actually heartbreaking. You never want to pull out of a championship game, but the situation was unavoidable. We had over 40 names on a list and still couldn\u2019t get enough bodies available. It\u2019s a sign of the times.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">UCC\u2019s withdrawal is a concern and will raise the issue once again of the divisional\/colleges section\u2019s long-term future. When bolstered by county-level talent, the college have long been capable of unsettling more established sides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cUCC have a proud tradition. I still think there\u2019s a future for the college going forward, but we just need a proper window. They had prepared fully for UCC, viewing the students as a dangerous opponent capable of producing a big performance on their day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Carbery\u2019s focus now shifts to ensuring the break does not disrupt momentum ahead of the quarter-finals.
