Russell<\/a>\u2018s sports drama \u201c<a id=\"auto-tag_madden\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/madden\/\" data-tag=\"madden\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Madden<\/a>,\u201d starring <a id=\"auto-tag_nicolas-cage\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/nicolas-cage\/\" data-tag=\"nicolas-cage\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nicolas Cage<\/a> as legendary American football coach and sports commentator John Madden, is heading to streaming in the fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">Amazon MGM, which is backing the movie, has scheduled \u201cMadden\u201d to land on Prime Video Nov. 18. It\u2019s expected to receive an awards-qualifying theatrical release earlier in November but won\u2019t play on the big screen nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">Madden was the burly, garrulous head coach of the Oakland Raiders in the 1970s, leading the team to many championship games and its first Super Bowl victory. He became a mainstay of television football coverage, spending three decades as a color commentator after retiring from coaching in 1979. Russell\u2019s movie captures Madden\u2019s career, friendship with Al Davis (<a id=\"auto-tag_christian-bale\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/christian-bale\/\" data-tag=\"christian-bale\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christian Bale<\/a>) and his partnership with his wife Virginia (Kathryn Hahn). John Mulaney, Sienna Miller and Shane Gillis round out the cast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">When \u201cMadden\u201d was announced in 2024, Russell teased that the \u201cfeature will be about the joy, humanity and genius that was John Madden in a wildly inventive, cool world of the 1970s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">It\u2019s unclear why Amazon MGM isn\u2019t granting a wide release for \u201cMadden\u201d considering that Russell is the Academy Award-nominated filmmaker of \u201cAmerican Hustle,\u201d \u201cSilver Linings Playbook\u201d and \u201cThe Fighter.\u201d However, Russell has long been a controversial figure in Hollywood with a documented history of combative and abusive behavior on his film sets.
