Its creator believes the lightweight robot could one day be used to monitor and ultimately help protect the ocean.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk6500013b6r8xcalrz2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The team of aero-aquatic roboticists looked at petrels, puffins and other diving birds, that use their wings to propel them through air and water. It also examined the complex dynamics that allow them to transition between the two.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk6500023b6r0queu8dl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Raphael Zufferey, lead author of the study and an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at MIT, said that while previous research existed on diving birds\u2019 wings and how they both swim and fly, \u201cno one had ever figured out how to transform that into a fully moving robot.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk6500033b6rov1az7y3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The team studied \u201cthe entire literature on (diving) birds,\u201d he said, mapping the flap frequency of different birds\u2019 wings in air and water, and how they varied by wingspan (the larger the bird, the lower the flap frequency).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk6500043b6r6ys5qqig@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It devised a 250-gram (9 ounce) flapping aerial-aquatic vehicle (FAAV), powered by a battery-operated motor, with nylon wings and a tail coated with water-repellent nanoparticles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk6500053b6rzu5tl6ut@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite first appearances, the FAAV isn\u2019t a straight case of biomimicry, stressed Zufferey.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk6600063b6rvqebug8y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Water is many hundreds of times denser than air (variables include temperature, pressure and air humidity). Diving birds have wings that partially fold in underwater, minimizing amplitude \u2014 how high and low the wings move during a single flap \u2014 and minimizing drag, and generating the necessary force to propel themselves forward. To do the same with a robot would require four more joints, more complex engineering and more mass. Instead, the team created a wing that doesn\u2019t fold, but is more flexible than a diving bird\u2019s, to minimize amplitude.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk6600073b6rsjhqp22g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Zufferey said the FAAV does not know that it\u2019s in water or air, merely that it is programmed to try and hit a certain frequency of wingbeats per second, irrespective of what it is moving through.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk6600083b6rr5zndcuf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The robot can fly at just over 6 meters per second (13.4 mph) and swim at nearly 1 meter per second (2.2 mph). In theory it can fly 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) or swim 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) on a single battery charge, though this has not been tested.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk6600093b6rq4xw2jx1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The lab tested the FAAV for a year in a water tank in Massachusetts and later Lake Geneva, Switzerland. Much of the fine-tuning involved working out the best angle for it to dive into water (70 degrees) and launch out of it. The robot can operate in mild wave and wind conditions, said Zufferey, but not rough conditions in its current iteration.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk66000a3b6rwcu2uxv8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFrom an engineering perspective, this is genuinely an impressive design,\u201d said Maaten Furlong, director of engineering science at the National Oceanography Centre, who was not involved in the project.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk66000b3b6r75mvmxrj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDeveloping a vehicle capable of operating effectively in both air and water is a significant technical challenge, and successfully integrating these two modes of operation is a notable engineering achievement,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk66000d3b6r0oku7vbr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After the initial breakthrough, the lab is now pursuing grants and other means to develop the robot further.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk66000e3b6r60jtiyfy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn this paper, we show that individually all of this is possible: we can fly, we can swim, we can transition, we can dive. But we haven\u2019t been able to piece it all together in one autonomous mission,\u201d said Zufferey.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk66000f3b6r5bcnuskh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re really trying to understand better how birds do this,\u201d he added. \u201cThe other reason we\u2019re doing this is we\u2019re hoping that this becomes (a) future tool for oceanography.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk66000g3b6rspkwraif@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientific sampling at sea is expensive, he contends, and there are use cases for a relatively cheap, lightweight aerial-aquatic vehicle.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk66000h3b6rhro0qyyw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The FAAV could be launched from sea or land and programmed to fly autonomously on set routes and dive underwater to collect samples, Zufferey hypothesized. \u201cI like the idea of bringing these robots into more dangerous scenarios,\u201d he added \u2014 collecting samples from toxic algae blooms, volcano lakes or close to icebergs, for example.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsedybjd00043b6r8lgnqux4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The vehicle could also be fitted with cameras for wildlife monitoring, Zufferey said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gettyimages-1148463478.jpg\" alt=\"A World Wildlife Fund (WWF) scientist prepares to release a drone in the Mediterranean Sea, 2019. Current ocean sampling methods can be expensive, argued Zufferey.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3264\" width=\"4896\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk66000i3b6r1v5282pf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Furlong had questions about the vehicle\u2019s payload capacity, robustness, regulatory approval and how it would operate in open ocean environments.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk66000j3b6ri1uswhit@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis class of combined aerial and underwater vehicle remains relatively unexplored, largely because it is technically difficult to develop and the operational advantages have yet to be clearly demonstrated,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk66000k3b6rqtmp0uue@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBio-inspired vehicles\u201d are hardly new, he added, and relatively few progress from laboratory to operational use: \u201cIn practice, conventional electric motors and propellors are highly efficient, reliable and inexpensive, making them difficult to outperform on cost, performance and practicality.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk66000l3b6r4pblxpqp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That said, he didn\u2019t rule out flapping robots in ocean research entirely. \u201cOcean scientists are generally technology-agnostic,\u201d Furlong said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk66000m3b6rze8rqvrl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey are less interested in how measurements are made than in obtaining high-quality data using the most reliable, cost-effective and operationally practical method. If this platform can demonstrate those attributes, it is likely to find adoption.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk66000n3b6riml7iti4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Zufferey calculates that with carbon fiber and other lightweight materials, the design could scale up to a 15-meter (49 feet) wingspan.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsdebk66000o3b6r8ebqtsxs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With the size as-is, the cost of the components is $300.
