{"id":585723,"date":"2026-08-07T06:32:19","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T06:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/585723\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T06:32:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T06:32:19","slug":"call-to-renew-cctv-at-cork-estate-to-stop-vicious-cycle-of-illegal-dumping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/585723\/","title":{"rendered":"Call to renew CCTV at Cork estate to\u00a0stop &#8216;vicious cycle&#8217; of illegal dumping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">Councillor Oliver Moran has said that CCTV should be renewed in\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.echolive.ie\/corknews\/arid-41887009.html\">Orchard Court estate<\/a> in Blackpool, where a \u201cvicious cycle\u201d of\u00a0[url=<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">https:\/\/www.echolive.ie\/corknews\/arid-41888587.html]illegal dumping[\/url] has been highlighted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">A spokesperson for Cork City Council\u2019s waste enforcement unit told Mr Moran that the most recent dumping highlighted in  The Echo, including leather furniture, a bedframe and mattress and multiple shopping trolleys, had been investigated by the council and cleared away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cEvidence was found connecting five individuals to the waste, and Cork City Council is in the process of issuing fines,\u201d said the spokesperson.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">They told Mr Moran that CCTV operated at the site between August 5 to December 19 last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cIt recorded 103 incidents of littering\/dumping. However, all of these were pedestrians (rather than from vehicles) and could not be identified,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5172421_8_articleinlinemobile_IMG_5093.jpeg\" alt=\"Illegal dumping in Orchard Court Estate, Blackpool\" title=\"Illegal dumping in Orchard Court Estate, Blackpool\" class=\"card-img\"\/>Illegal dumping in Orchard Court Estate, Blackpool<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cEnforcement staff will be making door-to-door inquiries to properties in Orchard Court and the surrounding area. Bye-laws require that all residents have a contact with a waste disposal company or can prove how they are otherwise disposing of their waste. A fine can be issued if a household is not able to demonstrate this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Clear message needed<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Mr Moran said it needed to be made clear to anyone that if you dump rubbish like this, \u201cyou will be caught\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThat takes effort to investigate and it\u2019s another way that we all pay for fly-tippers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cIt\u2019s not only the environmental costs and the way a neighbourhood is brought down. It\u2019s the price put on us all by taking staff away from other work, staff who collect the waste and those who investigate it and issue the fines, said Mr Moran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cUnfortunately, there\u2019s a vicious cycle that can take hold. When an area is known for illegal dumping, that can attract more, as more people outside of an area know it\u2019s a place where they think they can get away with it, and that someone else will pick it up for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThere\u2019s evidence now that Orchard Court is attracting waste from home renovation work. That\u2019s a reason to renew CCTV in the area, which will catch someone unloading waste from vans,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThere\u2019s a responsibility for homeowners too.
