Seven \u200cpeople were killed \u200bin a school shooting \u200bin \u2060Thailand on \u200cFriday, \u200cincluding \u200bthe \u2060gunman, and 15 \u200bpeople \u200bwere \u200cwounded, Thai police said. <\/p>\n
The shooting took place at a school in Nonthaburi, on the northwestern outskirts of Bangkok, according to a Royal Thai Police spokesman.<\/p>\n
The gunman shot and killed his grandparents \u200bat their \u2060home on Friday before \u200copening \u200cfire \u200bat the school, police \u200bsaid. He later shot himself, they added. <\/p>\n
The gunman, \u200cwho was a \u200bstudent, fired \u206026 \u2060rounds and \u200banother 34 rounds of ammunition were found at the \u200cscene, police \u2060said in a statement. <\/p>\n
Three students and three teachers were killed, according to Thai newspaper Khaosod.<\/p>\n
Several Thai broadcasters aired footage appearing to show the suspected gunman, believed to be a student at the school, walking through a hallway.<\/p>\n
Videos and photos shared on social media showed students running from classrooms, sheltering beneath desks and climbing through windows onto ledges outside the building as the shooting unfolded.<\/p>\n
Thai prime minister Anutin Charnvirakul said he was deeply saddened by the shooting. \u201cIt\u2019s a terrible tragedy. This should never have happened,\u201d he told reporters Friday.<\/p>\n
One 18-year-old student at the school said he initially thought there \u200bwere firecrackers going off or \u200bsomeone banging an object.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t think it was a \u200cgun at first,\u201d he said, \u201cThere \u200bwere many shots: bang bang bang. Then it went quiet. \u2060Then it started again.\u201d<\/p>\n
Thailand has one of southeast Asia\u2019s highest rates of civilian gun ownership, and gun violence is more common than in many neighboring countries. School shootings, however, remain relatively rare.<\/p>\n
