Sinn F\u00e9in TDs, Deputies David Cullinane and Conor McGuinness have called on the Government to accelerate the rollout of Connecting Ireland services and ensure rural and regional public transport is prioritised in Budget 2027.<\/p>\n
The Waterford representatives said communities across the city and county are being left waiting for promised services, while the national rollout of the programme has slowed in recent years.<\/p>\n
Deputy Cullinane said the reduction in the number of new and enhanced services being delivered nationally was a cause of concern.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe sharp slowdown in the rollout of Connecting Ireland services is deeply concerning, and it is communities in counties like Waterford that are paying the price,” he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe figures show that 65 new or enhanced services were delivered nationally in 2023, falling to 45 in 2024, 36 in 2025 and just four projects so far in 2026.”<\/p>\n
He said Waterford needed improved public transport links between the city, Dungarvan, Tramore, Portlaw, Dunmore East and towns and villages across the county.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany people living in rural communities have no realistic alternative to using a car. Young people, older people and those without access to a car can be left isolated and cut off from work, education, healthcare and essential services,” he said.<\/p>\n
Deputy Cullinane also pointed to delays to new Local Link services and reductions in some regional connections at a time when demand for public transport is increasing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Government talks about balanced regional development, climate action and reducing transport emissions, but those words mean little unless people outside Dublin are given a genuine public transport alternative,” he said.<\/p>\n
Deputy McGuinness said Connecting Ireland had the potential to significantly improve connectivity for communities across Waterford, particularly in rural areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cReliable bus services are essential for people travelling to work, college, medical appointments, shops and social activities. They are also vital for tackling rural isolation,” he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are communities across west Waterford and along the coast that have waited far too long for improved services.”<\/p>\n
Deputy McGuinness said the National Transport Authority had indicated that 87 services were still awaiting delivery and that at least \u20ac20 million annually would be required to complete the remaining programme.<\/p>\n
\u201cBudget 2027 must provide the funding needed to get these services moving. Waterford needs its fair share of investment and clear delivery dates for promised routes and service improvements,” he said.<\/p>\n
