{"id":588939,"date":"2026-08-10T13:44:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T13:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/588939\/"},"modified":"2026-08-10T13:44:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T13:44:08","slug":"a-chronicle-to-waste-ireland-spending-nearly-e12bn-propping-up-the-housing-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/588939\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cA chronicle to waste\u201d: Ireland spending nearly \u20ac12bn propping up the housing market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New analysis from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesspost.ie\/politics\/revealed-the-true-extent-of-the-states-multibillion-euro-spend-to-prop-up-irelands-housing-market\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Business Post<\/a> has shown that the Irish Government is spending \u20ac11.8 billion to tackle the housing crisis through different programmes, tax incentives, and schemes.<\/p>\n<p>This figure contrasts with the Department of Housing budget, \u20ac11.4 billion according to website \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whereyourmoneygoes.gov.ie\/en\/housing\/2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Where your money goes<\/a>\u2019, which has typically been used to represent state housing spend.<\/p>\n<p>This comes as polls show that the ongoing housing crisis consistently ranks among the top of voters\u2019 concerns.<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/shows\/newstalk-breakfast-234855\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Newstalk Breakfast<\/a>, Carol Tallan, CEO of Property District and author of Irish Property Buyers Handbook series, said this analysis was \u201ca chronicle to waste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said this spend comes as homelessness figures rise but that \u201cthe reality is we do need to spend that amount of money in tackling Ireland&#8217;s housing crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Ms. Tallan argued that current spending policies are not going to tackle the Irish housing crisis and that it is \u201cbeing wasted across bureaucratic delays [and] inefficiencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Housing issues \u201ccould have been mitigated at source\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Tallan said that problems of \u201cbureaucracy and delays\u201d exist in the public sector, and that \u201chuge levels of waste and inefficiency\u201d are present across the approved housing bodies.<\/p>\n<p>This contrasts with the private sector where risk is \u201cthe main killer of viability,\u201d according to Ms. Tallan.<\/p>\n<p>She argued that the opportunity arose during the financial crash to go back to \u201cfirst principles,\u201d which would have mitigated many issues \u201cat source.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Government &#8216;only incentivising some&#8217;
