A house that wraps you up in a hug. That\u2019s how its occupants describe the atmosphere created at Novas, The Recovery House in Limerick.<\/p>\n

Mayo interior designer James McNamara teamed up with fellow creatives and furniture maker Dfs to transform a cavern into a cosy cocoon.<\/p>\n

James and artists Carol Ahern, a native of Mitchelstown, Co Cork, based in Co Limerick, and Caroline Duffy, Dundalk, were faced with a blank canvas upon entering the living room at The Recovery House.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After they had worked their magic? \u201cIt\u2019s now a beautiful room, with sumptuous furnishings, stunning artwork and an absolutely wonderful vibe \u2014 almost like a warm hug,\u201d says Una Burns, head of advocacy and communications, Novas.<\/p>\n

Novas is a charity and housing body that works with people who are homeless, at risk of homelessness and experiencing addiction or social marginalisation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Its Recovery House in Limerick offers women a safe environment as they transition from residential addiction treatment. \u201cThis is a space dedicated to providing women with a safe and supportive environment to continue rebuilding their lives,\u201d adds Una.<\/p>\n

Looking at the revamped living room, James says: \u201cProjects like this remind you why thoughtful design matters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s not just about creating a room that looks beautiful. It\u2019s about creating a space that feels warm, welcoming and supportive for the people who use it every day.<\/p>\n

\n I hope every woman who walks through the door feels a genuine sense of comfort and belonging, and that this space becomes a positive part of their journey as they begin a new chapter.”\n <\/p>\n

Recovery House represents a significant step forward in supporting women in their healing journeys, says Una. \u201cJames and his team have ensured that the space promotes a warm and welcoming atmosphere, essential for the healing process,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

Comfort was central to the makeover. James chose the Kian accent chair in Sky and rose-tinted Joules Gilmorton sofa, both from Dfs, and complemented them with original artwork donated by Carol Ahern and Caroline Duffy. \u201cI was really proud to donate my painting \u2018The Wonky Teapot\u2019,\u201d says Carol. \u201cJames chose the piece because he felt it was the right fit for the space, which was lovely to hear.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I enjoyed being involved because I love seeing my paintings become part of an interior.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, art isn\u2019t just about filling a wall; it\u2019s about creating a feeling.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Colour is at the heart of everything I do, and I love how a painting can completely change the mood of a room and make it feel warmer and more welcoming.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of my work is inspired by the Irish landscape and the changing light around our dairy farm in Co Limerick.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I paint in a semi-abstract style, using colour and texture to capture a feeling rather than a specific place.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I also love painting everyday objects, like teapots, because there\u2019s something comforting and familiar about them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kukoon provided a hessian rug, Farrelly & Co donated paint, and JMC Studios provided the curtains.<\/p>\n

This is Dfs\u2019s fourth makeover project in Limerick, following its collaboration with Joanne Mooney at Novas McGarry House last year and with Tullio Orlandi for Mid-West Simon Community\u2019s Oaklodge and Novas Dial House with Roisin Lafferty. \u201cWe know how important it is to create comfortable and inviting environments and are proud to have supported several projects like this throughout Ireland,\u201d says Amy Ryan, DFS Limerick general manager.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re delighted to have aided the delivery of this makeover for The Recovery House, to create a space where the women spending time there can feel safe and empowered.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many women referred to Recovery House may have experienced homelessness or be at risk of returning to homelessness. \u201cThe aim is to equip them with the tools they need to maintain their recovery and build an independent future,\u201d adds Una Burns.<\/p>\n
