Image credit: NASA \/ ESA \/ CSA \/ Webb \/ STScI \/ Alyssa Pagan, STScI.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/simbad.cds.unistra.fr\/simbad\/sim-id?Ident=Eskimo+Nebula\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Eskimo Nebula<\/a> is located approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sci.news\/astronomy\/science-chandra-eskimo-nebula-01223.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">4,200 light-years<\/a> away in the constellation of Gemini.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise known as NGC 2392, the Clownface Nebula and the Lion Nebula, the nebula was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eskimo_Nebula\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">first spied<\/a> by the German-British astronomer William Herschel on January 17, 1787.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWebb\u2019s infrared vision highlights features like compact clumps of dust and a haze of ionized gas,\u201d the Webb astronomers said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s taken several thousand years for this collection of gas and dust to reach its current shape, and the nebula\u2019s components continue to be altered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe source of these constant changes and the reason for the nebula\u2019s distinct appearance is located at the center: the remains of a dying star.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe oxygen-rich central star has left behind a white dwarf that is \u2018cooking\u2019 everything from the inside and producing a bubble of ionized gas as it does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gas bubble is expanding over time and destroying dust that is in its path.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding why the swept-up gas has a complex structure of rings and shells, a common feature in planetary nebulae, is an ongoing endeavor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new image of the Eskimo Nebula was captured using the NIRCam and MIRI instruments onboard the NASA\/ESA\/CSA James Webb Space Telescope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Eskimo Nebula will continue to undergo changes as its gas and dust migrate away from the stellar core,\u201d the astronomers said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe estimate the nebula will eventually disperse in approximately 10,000 years, a relatively short period in astronomical terms.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"New infrared observations of the Eskimo Nebula, a bipolar double-shell planetary nebula in the constellation of Gemini, reveal&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":589297,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[139512,248930,10804,10805,248931,61,37160,60,248932,91,13923,248933,70273,82,9315,5623,16449],"class_list":["post-589296","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-science","tag-bipolar-planetary-nebula","tag-clownface-nebula","tag-csa","tag-esa","tag-eskimo-nebula","tag-ie","tag-ir","tag-ireland","tag-lion-nebula","tag-nasa","tag-nebula","tag-ngc-2392","tag-planetary-nebula","tag-science","tag-star","tag-webb","tag-white-dwarf"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/589296","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=589296"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/589296\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/589297"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=589296"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=589296"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=589296"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
