An All-Ireland senior hurling medal won by jailed former hurler DJ Carey (55) has been sold at auction for well in excess of it\u2019s guide price.<\/p>\n
Whyte\u2019s Auctioneers has confirmed that DJ Carey\u2019s 1992 All-Ireland medal that he won with Kilkenny, which had been offered for sale by private treaty, has been sold.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe medal was sold privately for an undisclosed sum,\u201d a spokesperson for Whytes Auctioneers confirmed.<\/p>\n
It was reported last week that a price in the region of \u20ac10,000 was expected for the medal.<\/p>\n
However, it is believed that the sale price exceeded that figure. The exact amount of the sale has not been disclosed.<\/p>\n
However, Carey suffered a dramatic fall from grace by falsely claiming he had cancer and needed money for medical treatment in the US.<\/p>\n
On November 3rd, 2025, Carey received a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to 10 deception charges involving 13 complainants.<\/p>\n
At his sentencing at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, the court heard that his overall offending involved 22 people.<\/p>\n
The total amount defrauded was not disclosed, though victim Noel Tynan described donating \u20ac10,000 after believing Carey\u2019s illness.<\/p>\n
He is currently being held at Mountjoy Prison in Dublin.<\/p>\n
Carey, who hurled for the Young Irelands club in Gowran in County Kilkenny, won five All-Irelands in total, with the first being 1992 and later won All-Ireland\u2019s in 1993, 2000, 2002 and 2003.<\/p>\n
