Don Felder\u2019s education with the Eagles is the reason he has an extensive collection of electric<\/a> and acoustic<\/a> guitars and equipment. It\u2019s not just Gear Acquisition Syndrome.<\/p>\n

His current studio setup includes a total of 19 instruments and 15 amps<\/a>, but none of them are simply gathering dust. Instead, he employs them all to pursue the kind of results he achieved with Eagles classics like \u201cHotel California.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI loved and learned a lot playing in a band that had three electric guitar players,\u201d Felder told Dr. Music<\/a>, adding that it applied equally to his time alongside Joe Walsh<\/a> and Glenn Frey as it had to his stint with Bernie Leadon<\/a> and Frey.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t all play Gibson Les Pauls at the same time,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe tonality of it \u2014 you can\u2019t separate them. They\u2019re just too unique.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo if I play a guitar track on a Les Paul, I need to play another part on a Strat<\/a> or a Tele<\/a> or on a PRS<\/a> or on different pickups. It\u2019s always a different combination, so you don\u2019t wind up with everything on the same bandwidth.\u201d<\/p>\n

He cited an example. \u201cIf I played a Les Paul, Walsh played a Strat, Glenn would play his Les Paul Junior that had different pickups. And we had these different amps. You could really define exactly the tone and the player in their own little space.\u201d<\/p>\n

Felder noted, \u201cYou need to place things sonically in separate positions. That was the [biggest] thing we learned making records where we had three guitar players playing at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, Felder\u2019s guitar history goes back further than the Eagles. As he recently told Guitar Player, while growing up in Florida he crossed paths<\/a> with everyone from Duane Allman to Tom Petty<\/a>, Stephen Stills<\/a> and his old Eagles bandmate Leadon.<\/p>\n

Which is likely why he thinks it takes more than 10,000 hours of practice to become a solid guitar player.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, 10,000 hours is only the beginning,\u201d he said. \u201cThat gets you there, but you\u2019ve got to stay there. Any time you start resting on your laurels when it comes to playing, you\u2019re making a big mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n
