{"id":591191,"date":"2026-08-12T18:30:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T18:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/591191\/"},"modified":"2026-08-12T18:30:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T18:30:09","slug":"contrite-irish-rail-red-faced-over-gaeilge-signage-error-at-galway-station-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/591191\/","title":{"rendered":"Contrite Irish Rail red-faced over Gaeilge signage error at Galway station \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-rail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-rail\/\">Irish Rail <\/a>has apologised for a spelling mistake in Irish language signage at new turnstiles installed at its revamped Ceannt Station in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway\/\">Galway <\/a>city. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The national rail operator said the incorrect spelling of the word \u201cCeannaigh\u201d \u2013 the Irish for buy \u2013 on new turnstiles at the station was due to an \u201cadministrative error by a supplier\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An Irish Rail spokesperson said the signs erected at the train station in the Republic\u2019s first official bilingual city will be corrected \u201cas soon as possible\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A Gaeilgeoir passenger spotted the misspelt word \u201cCeannaig\u201d on signage at the turnstiles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The signs were missing an \u201ch\u201d and, devoid of that letter, the word and sentence do not make sense. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Photograph: Dara Bradley\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3M3VS66ZJ5BORBW6ZICSC7FWZA.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"1066\"\/>Photograph: Dara Bradley <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cGalway is known across Ireland as a bilingual city where Irish and English hold equal status. It is a unique status that we are proud of,\u201d said Adam Mac Aog\u00e1in, who spotted the error. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cTo see the word \u2018ceannaigh\u2019, the first word on the signage, being misspelt in our primary train station that connects us to the rest of Ireland is a great disappointment.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The spelling mistake appears eight times in print, on signs attached to four of the new turnstiles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe are sorry for this error \u2013 we review all signage and have very clear standards to ensure our bilingual signage has the required prominence and accuracy prior to being posted,\u201d said Barry Kenny, corporate communications manager at the company. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn this instance, the correct spelling was actually provided prior to printing, but due to an administrative error by a supplier, the incorrect spelling was printed. We will arrange to have this corrected as soon as possible,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The new turnstiles are part of a \u20ac70 million overhaul of Ceannt Station off Eyre Square. The redevelopment includes an increase in platforms from two to five, a new southern entrance and facade, a new roof, retail units, customer facilities and toilets.
