Bia Energy\u2019s Chief Executive Officer, Brendan Traynor, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine of Ireland Martin Heydon T.D and Gas Networks Ireland\u2019s Head of Business Development Karen Doyle<\/p>\nGas Networks Ireland and Bia Energy have reached a major milestone in Ireland\u2019s energy transition with the successful connection of Bia Energy\u2019s \u20ac90 million renewable biomethane gas facility in Huntstown, Co. Dublin to the national gas network.<\/p>\n
This marks the first time that a biomethane production plant has been directly connected to the State\u2019s national gas network, thereby enabling the renewable biomethane gas produced on-site to be injected into the gas network for use by businesses and industry across Ireland.<\/p>\n
Along with Bia Energy, Gas Networks Ireland has connection agreements with six other biomethane producers which collectively will play a significant role in supporting the State\u2019s targets for renewable gas generation.<\/p>\n
Renewable biomethane gas is fully compatible with the existing national gas network and all existing appliances, technologies and vehicles that currently use gas. Biomethane seamlessly replaces natural gas to reduce emissions in heating, industry, transport, and power generation.<\/p>\n
Bia Energy is one of seven biomethane companies that recently received funding under the Government\u2019s National Biomethane Strategy Capital Grant Scheme. It received almost \u20ac3.9 million from the scheme to assist with its capital costs.<\/p>\n

Speaking as he officially launched Bia Energy\u2019s connection to the national gas grid, The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine of Ireland Martin Heydon T.D. Said: \u201cThe connection of Bia Energy\u2019s anaerobic digestion facility at Huntstown represents a significant step forward in the development of Ireland\u2019s renewable gas sector. It demonstrates how agricultural and organic waste can be converted into a valuable renewable energy source, reducing emissions and enhancing energy security.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe project also delivers benefits for agriculture through the production of digestate, which can be used as an alternative to chemical fertilisers, supporting more sustainable farming practices and a circular economy. Last month, the Government started issuing \u20ac19 million in funding to projects such as Bia Energy\u2019s Huntstown facility that were successful under the 2024 Biomethane Capital Grant Scheme\u201d<\/p>\n
To facilitate Bia Energy\u2019s direct connection to the national gas network, Gas Networks Ireland built an extension to the existing gas network and a new Biomethane Network Entry Facility, enabling the biomethane produced at the site in Huntstown to be safely and efficiently injected into the gas network.<\/p>\n
Structurally identical to natural gas, biomethane is a carbon neutral renewable gas that can be made from farm and food waste through a natural biological process known as anaerobic digestion. In addition to producing renewable gas, the process also creates a nutrient-rich biofertiliser called digestate which can be used to replace chemical fertilisers and recycle nutrients back into the food production system, with significant positive circular economy and environmental benefits.<\/p>\n
Gas Networks Ireland\u2019s Head of Business Development Karen Doyle, said: \u201cBia Energy\u2019s new direct connection to the gas network is a landmark day for Ireland\u2019s energy transition. Gas Networks Ireland is working to facilitate and assist the expansion of Ireland\u2019s biomethane sector, which is currently underway and we already have connection agreements with seven producers. The delivery and commissioning of these facilities will play an important role in helping to secure Ireland\u2019s indigenous energy supply and progress towards achieving the State\u2019s target of having 5.7 terawatt hours (TWh) of biomethane production by 2030, equivalent to about 10 per cent of the country\u2019s current gas demand.<\/p>\n
\u201cClean renewable biomethane gas can provide an immediate and practical decarbonisation solution for energy users, enabling businesses to reduce their emissions while continuing to utilise their existing gas infrastructure and equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bia Energy\u2019s Chief Executive Officer, Brendan Traynor said: \u201cBia Energy is delighted to be the first biomethane production plant to be directly connected to Ireland\u2019s national gas network. This is a very significant day, not just for the respective teams at Bia Energy and Gas Networks Ireland, who have worked in partnership to achieve this milestone, but also for the entire renewable gas industry in Ireland.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThrough anaerobic digestion we are turning organic waste into a valuable energy resource. Biomethane will play an important role in Ireland\u2019s energy future as it will enhance energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and have a positive impact on farming by reducing chemical fertilisers and replacing them with a higher quality organic biofertiliser. Our Dublin facility alone will help replace about 3,000 tonnes of chemical fertiliser every year.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bia Energy\u2019s biomethane plant at Huntstown, which is part of the Sretaw group founded by Irish businessman Eamon Waters, is using short-dated and surplus packaged food from the retail and hospitality sectors, as well materials from agriculture and food production and converting these organic items into renewable biomethane.<\/p>\n
Once operating at full capacity, the Huntstown plant is expected to deliver up to 120 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of biomethane annually into the gas network.<\/p>\n
Bia Energy will also shortly expand its biomethane production portfolio to include a facility in Kildare.<\/p>\n
