Once again, this traditional Irish music festival is superbly curated by the acclaimed Co Clare fiddle player Martin Hayes, who has devised a programme featuring musicians \u201cwho carry tradition with great care, alongside those who are extending and reimagining the music in thoughtful ways\u201d. Highlights include performances by De Danann founding member Charlie Piggott, his son Rowan Piggott, and M\u00e9abh N\u00ed Bheaglaoich <\/a>(Thursday, August 20th, Bantry House, 7.30pm, \u20ac45\/\u20ac36) and The Breath, aka Stuart McCallum and R\u00edoghnach Connolly (Saturday, August 22nd, Bantry House, 7.30pm, \u20ac45\/\u20ac36). The inaugural outing of this noise and experimental festival features an array of music acts that operate well below the commercial radar, yet the fact that tickets were snapped up is proof of the music\u2019s appeal. More than eight exponents of the pliable form are lined up, including Belfast\u2019s Optic Chain, Cork\u2019s Glottal Stop, Waterford\u2019s Ruair\u00ed \u00d3 Baoighill, Dublin\u2019s Dressing, Kildare\u2019s Luxury Mollusc, Wicklow\u2019s Pink Thistle and Drogheda\u2019s Oinism. For fans of drone, dark ambient, psychedelic, tape manipulation, and what the festival amusingly terms sean-n\u00f3(i)s(e).<\/p>\n

More than 10 years on from its first summer weekend, Another Love Story still manages to capture the sense of community and intimacy that has been central to it. Headline acts include veteran jungle act LTJ Bukem, Dutch-German club duo Steffi x Virginia, dub music producer Mad Professor, A Cosmic Tribute to Sun Ra Arkestra, and The Ambient Orbit. Irish acts performing over the weekend include Loah, Stella and the Dreaming, The Fynches, Seamus Hyland, Rua R\u00ed, Aisling Lyons and the Leon Stax Equation. Particular highlights include an early outing for Paddy Hannah\u2019s Burt Bacharach Show, and the festival\u2019s In Conversation events. (Friday, August 21st, is fully sold out.)<\/p>\n

For more than 40 years, Moby<\/a> has delivered music ranging from electronica, EDM, hardcore punk and sample-heavy pop to ambient and orchestral. Perhaps best known for his 1999 album, Play, which fuses field recordings and gospel\/folk vocals with hip-hop and electronica, Moby has since developed a more streamlined, quasi-classical approach, particularly with studio work. His live shows, however, feature what you might expect: all the club dance\/techno hits, many of which still hit the mark. Special guests are English dance group Faithless.<\/p>\n

Behind their Victorian respectability, clueless Reverend Canon Chasuble and shrewd governess Miss Prism share secrets, secrets and more secrets. This skittish, persuasive play – a reimagined scenario that focuses on the intertwined backstories of two roguish supporting characters in Oscar Wilde\u2019s The Importance of Being Earnest – celebrates its 10th anniversary with a residency in a Dublin city centre venue and then travels nationwide in September. Helen Norton and Jonathan White write and perform. <\/p>\n

Marking the start of the Lughnasa harvest with a celebration of shared heritage reflects this festival\u2019s theme of art and nature. Featured guests include acclaimed naturalists, zoologists, poets, artists, writers, singers, and dancers. Highlights include writer Helen McDonald (in conversation with Hilary Adam White, Saturday, August 22nd, St Patrick\u2019s Church, Curtlestown, 4pm, \u20ac18) and poet\/essayist Anthony Vahni Capildeo (in conversation with Selina Guinness, Saturday, August 22nd, St Patrick\u2019s Church, Curtlestown, 5.30pm, \u20ac18). The festival concludes with The Gathering Field (Sunday, August 23rd, St Patrick\u2019s Church, Curtlestown, 7.30pm, \u20ac20), a traditional Irish music event featuring sean-n\u00f3s dancer Edwina Guckian and musician Seamus Hyland.<\/p>\n

One of Ireland\u2019s busiest comedians, John Colleary embarks on his fourth solo tour in as many years. Following last year\u2019s Wildlife shows, Colleary\u2019s new stand-up production, Mighty Quack, promises to deliver what Tommy Tiernan has described as \u201cplayful and inventive\u201d jokes. Unusually for a comedy tour these days, Colleary isn\u2019t presenting a themed performance but rather a light-hearted gag fest of the smartest order. His next solo show is at TLT, Drogheda, Co Louth, on Friday, September 25th (8pm, \u20ac27, thetlt.ie<\/a>). A nationwide tour follows from November onwards. <\/p>\n

Now in its 27th year, Dublin City Council\u2019s Opera in the Open presents amphitheatre-style lunchtime performances in abridged formats narrated in English. First performed in 1858, Jacques Offenbach\u2019s comic opera Orpheus in the Underworld features Edward Finnegan and Ciara Smith. The series ends on Thursday, August 27th (same venue and time) with a gala performance celebrating the work of Giuseppe Verdi. The musical director for each opera is David Wray. <\/p>\n

Under the title of Whorls: Framed Works and Small Objects, Derry-born, Cork-based artist Eil\u00eds O\u2019Connell exhibits a rare selection of her print and drawing work. She is perhaps best known for her large-scale sculpture works (O\u2019Connell is a founding director of Cork\u2019s National Sculpture Factory), bit this exhibition presents a more intimate side of her practice, and one partly influenced by neural circuits in the brain. <\/p>\n
