{"id":592162,"date":"2026-08-13T16:10:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T16:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/592162\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T16:10:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T16:10:09","slug":"national-museum-of-ireland-employee-charged-with-having-bomb-seeks-bail-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/592162\/","title":{"rendered":"National Museum of Ireland employee charged with having bomb seeks bail \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A National Museum of Ireland employee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2026\/07\/27\/national-museum-employee-wants-to-reapply-for-bail-at-earliest-chance-following-bomb-charge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2026\/07\/27\/national-museum-employee-wants-to-reapply-for-bail-at-earliest-chance-following-bomb-charge\/\">charged in connection with the seizure of an explosive device<\/a> in Co Monaghan near the Border has lodged a High Court bail application.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Simon O\u2019Donovan (44), of Sperrin Road, Dublin 12, is seeking his release after previously being remanded in custody by the Special Criminal Court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He is charged with, on July 22nd, at St Laurence\u2019s Road, Chapelizod, Dublin 10, knowingly having in his possession an explosive improvised device.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This offence is contrary to section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1883 as amended by section 15 (4) of the Offences Against the State (Amendment) Act 1998.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the High Court bail sitting on Thursday, Judge Karen O\u2019Connor noted the accused\u2019s application was listed. However, counsel for the defence and the State requested the matter be adjourned until Tuesday, which was granted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The prosecution follows an operation last month involving the discovery of an alleged bomb in a car in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/monaghan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/monaghan\/\">Co Monaghan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">During initial hearings, it was alleged the device had been stored within the confines of Collins Barracks National Museum, where O\u2019Donovan worked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He is also due back before the Special Criminal Court on October 5th, when he is expected to be served with the book of evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Law student Isobella Perrie Sullivan (25) of Abbeylands Park, Clane, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kildare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kildare\/\">Co Kildare<\/a>, was charged with possession of explosives on July 22nd in connection with the same investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She was released on \u20ac15,000 bail, subject to conditions, including that she not have any contact with anyone in the republican political party Saoradh, or the New IRA, after the car she was in was stopped by garda\u00ed on the N2 at Aclint, Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At a previous hearing in Trim District Court, Perrie Sullivan\u2019s defence solicitor stated she had been asked to take a bag to the North, was unaware what it contained and had been \u201cmanipulated\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her case has been adjourned until September 28th.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A National Museum of Ireland employee charged in connection with the seizure of an explosive device in Co&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":592163,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[73,61,60,14312,43,31297],"class_list":["post-592162","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-high-court","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-national-museum-of-ireland","tag-news","tag-special-criminal-court"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/592162","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=592162"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/592162\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/592163"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=592162"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=592162"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=592162"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
