{"id":592323,"date":"2026-08-13T19:46:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T19:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/592323\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T19:46:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T19:46:08","slug":"cork-farmer-dies-after-drowning-while-getting-water-for-animals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/592323\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork farmer dies after drowning while getting water for animals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A farmer has drowned in\u00a0Co Cork\u00a0while trying to get water for his animals from a local river.<\/p>\n<p>The man, in his 50s, got into difficulty in the River Bandon at Dunmanway in Cork on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Garda\u00ed and emergency services responded to the incident.<\/p>\n<p>He was pronounced dead, and his body was taken to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem exam.<\/p>\n<p>Garda\u00ed said the coroner and the Health and Safety Authority have been notified.<\/p>\n<p>He has been named locally as Eugene McSweeney from Ballyboy, near Dunmanway in Co Cork.<\/p>\n<p>It is understood that Mr McSweeney, who was single, slipped in to a submerged hole and could not get out.<\/p>\n<p>Farmers are increasingly under pressure to secure water supplies for their cattle as the long dry spell continues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Independent Ireland TD for Cork South West Michael Collins told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/munster\/arid-41895622.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Irish Examiner<\/a> the man had been getting water for his animals from the River Bandon, which a lot of farmers were having to do due to the hot weather.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe all have to be so careful around water in this weather, but it\u2019s difficult when people have to retrieve water for their animals, there is a serious drought at the moment, and farmers are under severe pressure to make sure their animals are catered for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cMy sincere sympathies to his family at this time for their tragic loss, and to his neighbours and friends,\u201d Collins said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A farmer has drowned in\u00a0Co Cork\u00a0while trying to get water for his animals from a local river.
