A\u00a020-year-old man has been refused bail after Garda\u00ed said he “likely” poses a “danger to the community of Kenmare”.<\/p>\n

Daniel Bulat<\/a> appeared before Judge Liz Healy at Tralee District Court today, charged with three offences arising from an alleged incident in the town early on Sunday morning (09\/08\/2026).<\/p>\n

Mr Bulat, of no fixed abode, was applying for bail on three charges relating to an alleged knife attack in the Square, Kenmare, shortly before 3am (02:50am).<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Romanian national is charged with two counts of assault causing harm and one count of possessing a 6-inch kitchen knife in a public place.<\/p>\n

Detective Garda Daire O’Sullivan outlined An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na<\/a>‘s reasons for opposing bail.<\/p>\n

These included the seriousness and nature of the alleged offences, and the strength of the evidence.<\/p>\n

He said that this included CCTV and mobile phone footage, and “certain admissions made in respect of the \u2026 [alleged] offensive weapons offence”.<\/p>\n

He said other evidence included that Mr Bulat “was caught red-handed” by Garda\u00ed, a 6-inch kitchen knife found in “close proximity” to where he was arrested, and that clothing seized from Mr Bulat matched clothes seen on CCTV and mobile phone footage.<\/p>\n

The judge was told the situation would have been “a lot worse” had two members of the public not allegedly intervened to stop Mr Bulat.<\/p>\n

Both of these men sustained slash wounds.<\/p>\n

The court heard that Mr Bulat had arrived at Dublin Airport on 12 June from France.<\/p>\n

His solicitor, Killarney-based Padraig O’Connell reminded the court that Mr Bulat was innocent until proven guilty, that he has no previous convictions in Ireland, and none elsewhere “as far as we know”.<\/p>\n

Garda\u00ed are awaiting an update from the Romanian authorities, and the court was told they do not have access to Mr Bulat’s passport.<\/p>\n

Detective Garda O’Sullivan said Garda\u00ed believe that if Mr Bulat were granted bail, he would “commit further serious offences” and “fail to turn up to face trial”.<\/p>\n
