This warmer water transfers vast quantities of heat into the atmosphere via clouds and heavy precipitation. This, in turn, helps shift weather patterns across the globe, favoring drought in Indonesia and Australia, flooding in parts of South America and many other impacts elsewhere.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqghpsp00053b6riy72fm26@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The intensity of an El Ni\u00f1o is determined by how hot the ocean temperatures get compared to average in a benchmark region of the tropical Pacific. NOAA expects this event to exceed even the massive Super El Ni\u00f1o that occurred in 1982 to 1983, which was the previous record-holder for its intensity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqghpsp00063b6rcefzw0nm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Specifically, NOAA forecasters are anticipating that sea surface temperature anomalies in the Ni\u00f1o region will exceed 2.5 degrees Celsius above average, as measured over a three-month timespan to factor out shorter-term variability.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqghpsp00073b6rwa80syzl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Long-term climate change means that background ocean temperatures throughout the tropical oceans have climbed in recent decades, which can mute the signature of El Ni\u00f1o.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqghpsp00083b6rlud9zr2w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Because of this, NOAA uses a new El Ni\u00f1o index known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/17\/weather\/el-nino-global-warming-pacific-ocean\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Relative Oceanic Ni\u00f1o Index<\/a>, or RONI, which takes that broader warming trend into consideration. Even using that handicap, however, this El Ni\u00f1o is on track to be unprecedented.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqghpsp00093b6r2e0gahva@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is a genuinely remarkable event,\u201d said University of California climate scientist Daniel Swain in a YouTube briefing on El Ni\u00f1o broadcast this week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqghpsp000a3b6rz2tl97sm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re already at record-breaking or record-tying territory now, and we\u2019re expected to skyrocket,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqghpsp000c3b6reoaxhj3k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The effects of each El Ni\u00f1o tend to be unique, and society is in uncharted territory with this one. Never has there been an El Ni\u00f1o this intense, nor has a powerful El Ni\u00f1o taken place against a background climate that was as hot as it is now. These factors make its impacts somewhat of a wild card, experts say, with the effects of global warming acting in concert with El Ni\u00f1o to heighten the severity of heat waves and other disasters.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqghpsq000d3b6r7qf5dgah@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Just because the Super El Ni\u00f1o is expected to be record-strong does not mean that its impacts will be markedly worse or are guaranteed to occur in most of the locations that are typically affected, NOAA forecasters cautioned in their update.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqghpsq000e3b6rsi0tax97@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, it does increase the odds of typical El Ni\u00f1o impacts, particularly in the fall and winter months when its influence on the weather in the Northern Hemisphere peaks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqghpsq000f3b6r4zov7xin@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the US, this can mean unusually wet conditions from California across the southern tier of the country, all the way to Florida. In addition, El Ni\u00f1o winters tend to be milder and drier than average in parts of the Midwest.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsqghpsq000g3b6r58h7k8gn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            El Ni\u00f1o boosts global average temperatures, with the El Ni\u00f1o signal riding on top of the human-caused global warming trend, like an ascending escalator.
