Fifty years ago, Swedish pop sensation ABBA<\/a> released their single Dancing Queen<\/a>. It reached number one in 15 countries, from Australia to the US, to Norway and South Africa.<\/p>\n

Five decades later it\u2019s still riding the airwaves, being belted out on the West End stage<\/a>, squealed at karaoke parties, paraded at Mardi Gras, and danced to at wedding receptions. <\/p>\n

How did this sweet yet corny song wheedle its way into our lives, and manage to stay there for half a century? <\/p>\n

Birth of a hit<\/p>\n

Dancing Queen was born in 1975, a year after ABBA\u2019s famous Eurovision Song Contest win with Waterloo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

ABBA\u2019s popularity had expanded but they hadn\u2019t yet cracked the prized American market. The rising disco trend offered the next best shot. <\/p>\n

In his book ABBA All The Songs: The Story Behind Every Track, author Benoit Clerc<\/a> tells the story of band members Benny and Bjorn workshopping their new song at a cabin on Viggso island near Stockholm. They recorded a rough piano and guitar demo on cassette<\/a>, then played it to their manager, Stig Anderson<\/a>, and his teenage daughter Marie. Marie later described it as an<\/a> \u201cawful\u201d recording of \u201cthe most incredible song\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the studio in Stockholm, the duo worked with musicians to craft a rhythmic dance groove, inspired by George McCrae\u2019s 1974 disco hit Rock Your Baby<\/a>. Two days later they had a draft backing track titled Boogaloo. ABBA historian Carl Magnus Palm reports<\/a> that when Benny played the song to one of the group\u2019s vocalists, Anni-Frid, she was \u201cmoved to tears\u201d. <\/p>\n

Manager Stig renamed the song Dancing Queen in a serendipitous move. ABBA was invited to perform at the gala for Swedish King Carl and his soon-to-be queen in June, 1976<\/a>. They had the perfect song. Two months later, Dancing Queen officially launched and rocketed around the world. <\/p>\n

Musical magic<\/p>\n

Dancing Queen showcases the famous Swedish flair for thoughtful design and assembly. Rather than the lightning pace of Gloria Gaynor\u2019s Never Can Say Goodbye<\/a> (128 beats per minute), Dancing Queen\u2019s bedrock rhythm grooves at a sustainable 100. <\/p>\n

Unlike many pop songs, the vocals don\u2019t begin predictably with the verse; nor the first line of the chorus (\u201cyou are the dancing queen\u201d). Instead, they launch on the highest note halfway through the chorus (\u201cyou can dance\u201d). Given the verse\u2019s low-pitch, it\u2019s a clever way to grab the listener\u2019s attention. Sven-Olof Walldoff\u2019s<\/a> string arrangement adds ascending swells that rise to the chorus and tug on the heart. <\/p>\n

Benny\u2019s piano playing also adds drama and grandeur. He begins the song with a theatrical glissando<\/a>, where he runs his fingers down the piano\u2019s white keys. He then stretches his fingers to play octaves<\/a> so the piano\u2019s high melody is reinforced with a lower note. <\/p>\n

Crafting the lyrics<\/p>\n

Renaming the song to \u201cDancing Queen\u201d offered a chance for a more mature dance story than Benny and Bjorn\u2019s 1972 composition Nina, Pretty Ballerina<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Unlike sneaking out of the home like Cinderella, the Queen takes herself to the dance. She hunts for what she enjoys. Finding a king might be nice, but partners are optional to \u201chaving the time of your life\u201d. <\/p>\n

With its double meaning, the song\u2019s queen<\/a> protagonist connected organically with the LGBTQIA+ community. Dancing Queen eventually became a popular gay anthem at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, and was championed by singers such as Kylie Minogue. The bold message resonated: \u201cYou can dance, you can jive\u201d \u2013 regardless of who you are, or who you love.<\/p>\n

There is, however, a dubious lyric. Stig\u2019s title created a songwriting challenge: find three syllable rhymes for Dancing Queen. \u201cTambourine\u201d is cheesy but harmless, but \u201cseventeen\u201d is loaded. <\/p>\n

Is ABBA casting teenage girls as \u201cteasers\u201d who seek to \u201cturn them on\u201d? The ethics of the lyrics have been largely overlooked by listeners and composers.<\/p>\n

ABBA revival<\/p>\n

In the 1980s, the world replaced its appetite for sweet Swedes with musical roughage such as grunge. ABBA broke up in 1982. <\/p>\n

A decade passed before a greatest hits album, ABBA Gold<\/a>, and a quirky Australian film, Muriel\u2019s Wedding (1994) revived a nostalgic yearning for ABBA\u2019s pretty songs.<\/p>\n

Live performances of Dancing Queen by U2\u2019s Bono<\/a>, and much later by Metallica\u2019s Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo, gave it rock legend endorsements.<\/p>\n

The year 1999 brought a second popularity resurgence with the jukebox musical Mamma Mia<\/a> premiering in London\u2019s West End. This fictional story wove together ABBA hits including the indomitable Dancing Queen. The subsequent 2008 movie starring Meryl Streep<\/a> sold Dancing Queen to the next generation. And in 2015, the track was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Perhaps this reporter from 1977 best explains Dancing Queen\u2019s enduring appeal<\/a>: <\/p>\n

There are two reasons for ABBA\u2019s grip on the popular market. One is that they make near technically perfect records.
