Reportedly, a Chinese commercial <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/kessler-syndrome-space-debris\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/kessler-syndrome-space-debris\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/kessler-syndrome-space-debris\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space debris<\/a> monitoring satellite tracked and recorded the 5,400-mph (8,690-kph) moon punch, too.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-18051010-9670-11f1-a5c3-a14068096578-2\">Wandering through space for over a year, the leftover <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon 9<\/a> upper stage had sent Firefly Aerospace&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/private-spaceflight\/we-learned-so-much-that-we-didnt-know-firefly-aerospaces-blue-ghost-moon-lander-mission-was-full-of-surprises\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/private-spaceflight\/we-learned-so-much-that-we-didnt-know-firefly-aerospaces-blue-ghost-moon-lander-mission-was-full-of-surprises\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/private-spaceflight\/we-learned-so-much-that-we-didnt-know-firefly-aerospaces-blue-ghost-moon-lander-mission-was-full-of-surprises\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Ghost-1 lander<\/a> on its way to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> back on Jan. 15, 2025. Also sent moonward on that flight was the Hakuto-R Mission 2&#8217;s Resilience, a robotic lunar lander developed by the Japanese company ispace. While the moon has reclaimed its serenity, the implications of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/moon\/a-spacex-rocket-just-crashed-into-the-moon-now-the-race-is-on-to-get-a-look-at-the-impact-site\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/moon\/a-spacex-rocket-just-crashed-into-the-moon-now-the-race-is-on-to-get-a-look-at-the-impact-site\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/moon\/a-spacex-rocket-just-crashed-into-the-moon-now-the-race-is-on-to-get-a-look-at-the-impact-site\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the uncontrolled collision<\/a> continue to reverberate.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-d47eb9bc-9670-11f1-a23b-339305b79fa8\"\/>Close encounter<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-d47eba34-9670-11f1-a65b-61349f667056\">Interestingly, there was also the prospect of a too-close-for-comfort conjunction of the Falcon 9 upper stage and Danuri.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We noticed roughly late June that there is an incoming Falcon 9 upper stage toward the moon, and also knew that it would be close to Danuri,&#8221; Eunhyeuk Kim, a senior researcher at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), told Space.com.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>There was a huge uncertainty in the predicted trajectory of the upper stage, Kim said, while the orbit information of South Korea&#8217;s Danuri lunar orbiter was quite accurate. &#8220;Therefore, we could not neglect the probability of an incoming and close encounter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ZqM2ksXv9umn7FoyzhTFV6.jpg\" alt=\"a photograph of a grey mottled surface on which a dark oval area is circled in white\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ZqM2ksXv9umn7FoyzhTFV6.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ZqM2ksXv9umn7FoyzhTFV6.jpg\" class=\"rounded-[var(--image--border-radius,0)] inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Before-and-after imagery of the impact site. (Image credit: KARI)<a id=\"elk-d47ebab6-9670-11f1-9f6b-493ec4fd21ad\"\/>Spacecraft maneuver<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-d47ebb24-9670-11f1-8145-afd867e575ce\">However, around mid July, the KARI\/Danuri team performed a maneuver of the spacecraft in preparation of a near-total <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15689-lunar-eclipses.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15689-lunar-eclipses.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15689-lunar-eclipses.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lunar eclipse<\/a> on Aug. 28, said Kim. Given the moon&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18067-moon-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18067-moon-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18067-moon-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lack of a substantial atmosphere<\/a>, there is no air resistance to slow debris down. An impact therefore hurls high-speed ejecta (fine regolith and rock fragments) across vast distances at bullet-like speeds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While this isn&#8217;t a major threat to isolated missions today, as we establish permanent lunar infrastructure, high-velocity ejecta poses a genuine hazard to surface habitats, solar arrays and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">working astronauts<\/a>,&#8221; Sladen said.<\/p>\n<p>To mitigate this issue, Sladen suggested that the industry will likely need designated impact zones or strictly controlled, targeted de-orbit protocols to ensure that spent hardware lands far from active installations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That said, human-made debris is only half the equation,&#8221; Sladen continued. &#8220;Natural meteorites remain an ongoing background threat, and, while <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/dinosaur-killing-asteroid-may-have-caused-firestorms-17-times-hotter-than-the-thermal-limit-lethal-to-humans\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/dinosaur-killing-asteroid-may-have-caused-firestorms-17-times-hotter-than-the-thermal-limit-lethal-to-humans\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/dinosaur-killing-asteroid-may-have-caused-firestorms-17-times-hotter-than-the-thermal-limit-lethal-to-humans\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">massive natural strikes<\/a> are rare, they hit at significantly higher speeds and carry far more energy,&#8221; Sladen said. &#8220;Controlling our own hardware is simply the part of the risk profile we actually have the power to manage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-d47ebda4-9670-11f1-8458-95bbe3041951\"\/>Plume detections<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-d47ebe12-9670-11f1-9220-330dc63bdba8\">In the meantime, while the Falcon 9 impact was tough to see from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>, several observations from our planet reported the detection of sodium and lithium gas above the crash site.<\/p>\n<p>The European Southern Observatory&#8217;s (ESO) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Very Large Telescope<\/a> (VLT) in Chile, for example, saw the aftermath of the impact. The ESO reported that a chemical fingerprint of the impact was visible for five to 10 minutes, with an enormous plume of lunar material stirred up due to the hard-hitting hardware.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m happy that ESO recorded some evidence of it through VLT, and Danuri has found the exact impact location,&#8221; said William Jo, a graduate research assistant at the University of Texas, Austin who performed some pre-strike computer simulations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we&#8217;ve learned so far is that the plume was too faint to see against the bright lunar surface, and only a large observatory telescope could pick some parts of it out against the dark sky, which is exactly what happened,&#8221; Jo told Space.com. &#8220;The plume must have shot out high,&#8221; he said, &#8220;and I&#8217;d like to know how high, or even whether we can replicate the signals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-d47ebe8a-9670-11f1-8d60-635bf072d1ee\"\/>Targets of opportunity<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-d47ebef8-9670-11f1-bd1b-2df7f6c156a3\">&#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15693-telescopes-beginners-telescope-reviews-buying-guide.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15693-telescopes-beginners-telescope-reviews-buying-guide.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15693-telescopes-beginners-telescope-reviews-buying-guide.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Telescopes<\/a> make the best spaceships,&#8221; pointed out Elaina Hyde, director of the Allan I Carswell Observatory at York University in Canada. &#8220;We are always on the lookout for &#8216;targets of opportunity&#8217; like this event.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hyde organized a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/-PRpwegUnLw\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/-PRpwegUnLw\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">livestream event<\/a>, training the observatory on the collision locale. They were unable to spot the impact, however.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The lunar collision was not on our regular research program, but when it happened, we put it as a high-priority item to observe if the weather was clear,&#8221; Hyde said. &#8220;Anything that happens quickly like this is often a target of opportunity, because you do not get a long time to plan the observation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, since it was not visible from our location in Toronto, our &#8216;null&#8217; or non detection can actually help to limit the estimates on how big the dust plume was and perhaps some of its properties,&#8221; said Hyde.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.28%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4XX7TKHkkxFP8xUGZReLfm.jpg\" alt=\"The Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT) in Arizona.\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4XX7TKHkkxFP8xUGZReLfm.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4XX7TKHkkxFP8xUGZReLfm.jpg\" class=\"rounded-[var(--image--border-radius,0)] inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Lowell Observatory)<a id=\"elk-d47ec47a-9670-11f1-86da-0bc0297b89b4\"\/>Impact response <\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-d47ec4fc-9670-11f1-bb0e-039ec9c7db40\">Also on the moon impact watch were observers using Lowell Observatory equipment in Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>These researchers managed to measure a response from the rocket stage impact, spotting a sizable sodium and lithium gas plume that lasted between five and 10 minutes after impact, reported Carl Schmidt, an assistant research professor at Boston University&#8217;s Center for Space Physics.<\/p>\n<p>Observers at the 4.3-meter Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT) in Happy Jack, Arizona used a long slit spectrograph to detect the plume.
