{"id":593288,"date":"2026-08-14T18:36:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T18:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/593288\/"},"modified":"2026-08-14T18:36:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T18:36:08","slug":"inmate-who-died-after-serious-assault-in-wheatfield-prison-is-named-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/593288\/","title":{"rendered":"Inmate who died after serious assault in Wheatfield Prison is named \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A man (39) has died following a serious assault in Wheatfield Prison in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\">Dublin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An investigation is under way into the man\u2019s death shortly before midnight on Thursday, after he was allegedly assaulted in his cell, which he was sharing with another inmate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The man has been named locally as Brendan Gahan (39), from Tallaght, who was serving a sentence for possession of drugs for sale or supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\">Garda\u00ed<\/a> are awaiting a postmortem  to determine the direction of their investigation. It is understood investigators are examining whether a bladed weapon was used in the assault.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Gahan, was serving a sentence of three years and nine months. He was sentenced in Dublin in February after pleading guilty to two counts of possession of drugs for sale or supply. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-prison-service\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-prison-service\/\">Irish Prison Service<\/a> said it could \u201cconfirm a death in custody at Wheatfield Prison on August 13th\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAll deaths in custody are investigated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-prison-service\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-prison-service\">Irish Prison Service<\/a>, the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na, where circumstances warrant,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe Irish Prison Service wish to express our condolences to the deceased\u2019s family and friends.
