Fortune fell on Derry City’s side as goals from Michael Duffy and new signing Tyler Smith saw the visitors to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over UCD to advance to the Club Orange FAI Cup fourth round.<\/p>\n

The attackers struck in either half, bisected by a superb Louis Dignam equaliser, in a game the Students dominated for long spells and hit the woodwork no fewer than three times.<\/p>\n

Duffy had found the net with an early free kick as the Premier Division side looked set to coast past their less experienced counterparts.<\/p>\n

What followed was far from a fait accomplis however, as the Belfield side controlled much of the game with varied passing and patterns of play that bamboozled the visitors.<\/p>\n

Dignam levelled proceedings in the 17th minute and full back Luca Callioce twice hit the bar late in the first half before Smith put Derry in front against the run of play.<\/p>\n

A tired tackle from Ciaran Lennox on Smith allowed Duffy to line up a free kick after seven minutes and he left Noah Douglas would no chance as he curled into the top corner.<\/p>\n

With striker Liam Boyce and Irish centurion James McClean absent, the latter amid a contract dispute, Duffy provides the spark of magic in front of goal desperately needed.<\/p>\n

It was Dignam who paid that back in kind, however, as he outpaced the younger McClean brother, Patrick, before rounding Brian Maher and slotting home.<\/p>\n

From there it was one-way traffic and 18-year-old Callioce twice cracked the bar from 20 yards, the second following a wonderful turn to eke out space from Mikey McCullough\u2019s pass.<\/p>\n

Dignam continued to impress and, when Derry\u2019s centre-halves misjudged a Douglas long ball, he played Goodness Ogbonna in on goal but a heavy touch allowed Maher to sweep up.<\/p>\n

And UCD were left to rue the miss as Smith and Duffy played a neat one-two on the edge of the box and the new recruit from Rochdale made no mistake from close range.<\/p>\n

There was still time for UCD to threaten and, despite an improvement from the visitors as they rang the changes, Students sub Charles Akinrintayo hit the post on the break.<\/p>\n

The hosts had one more chance as Akinrintayo\u2019s twinkle toes allowed him tee up fellow sub Stephen Mohan but McClean threw himself in the way of his point-blank effort and Derry held out.<\/p>\n
