In one of the most eagerly anticipated races of the week, Switzerland’s Audery Werro took home the women’s 800m crown on day five of the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.<\/p>\n
Werro, who was subject of a controversial re-instating to the final following a review in the semi-final stage, held off hometown hero Keeley Hodgkinson and Femke Broeders-Bol to win.<\/p>\n
With all three being evenly tipped for glory, 22-year-old Werro led at the halfway stage and held off a fightback from her opponents to win and break the championship record, crossing the line in a time of 1:54.81.<\/p>\n

The Norwegian, was crowned champion in the event for the fourth time in a row, despite injury issues leading, finishing at a time of 46.63, also a new Championship record.<\/p>\n In the day’s other finals, Owen Ansah of Germany took home gold in the men’s 400m after an extraordinary photo finish.<\/p>\n Ansah, and Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes were first across the finish line, but in an extraordinary outcome, Eseosa Fostine Desalu and Timothe Mumenthaler will have to share the bronze as the review failed to seperate the two runners.<\/p>\n Not one you see every day<\/p>\n Owen Ansah is the 200m winner, but there’s a tie for bronze between Eseosa Fostine Desalu and Timothe Mumenthaler #RTESport<\/a> pic.twitter.com\/lKwLTEqM8i<\/a><\/p>\n
