Motorsport Ireland has been asked to “learn from mistakes” made at a rally in Kerry, in which a 22-year-old who died after his car veered off the track.<\/p>\n

A verdict of accidental death was recorded yesterday at the inquest of Eoin McCarthy<\/a>, who died on the 20th of February 2022, following an accident at the Killarney Forestry Rally in Castleisland.<\/p>\n

The event took place two days after Storm Eunice and there was no mobile coverage at crash site, resulting in delays in communication.<\/p>\n

The inquest also heard Motorsport Ireland had failed to assign a designated area in which the air ambulance should land in the event of an emergency at the rally.<\/p>\n

Coroner Philip Comyn said over the coming days he will consider the recommendations sought by the McCarthy family – including putting safety barriers in areas of risk and introducing a mandatory adverse weather protocol.<\/p>\n
