\n\tStarrgirl, Ayra Starr<\/a>\u2018s third full-length studio album, tops this week\u2019s new music poll<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tListeners voted in a poll published Friday (Aug. 14)\u00a0on\u00a0Billboard<\/a>, choosing the Nigerian Afropop star\u2019s latest release as their favorite new music.<\/p>\n

\n\tStarrgirl rose above a number of new releases this week \u2014 from music acts including KATSEYE, Phoebe Bridgers, Troye Sivan, Becky G and more. At the poll\u2019s closing time on Sunday, Starr\u2019s new LP came out on top with more than 87% of the vote.<\/p>\n

\n\tStarrgirl, the follow-up to the singer\u2019s The Year I Turned 21 album (released in 2024), is a collection of 16 tracks, including recent single \u201cTornado\u201d and last year\u2019s Grammy-nominated Wizkid collab, \u201cGimme Dat\u201d \u2014 plus features with names like Zayn, Rema, Leon Thomas and Danny Ocean. Starr expanded her sound on the project, bringing in more dance and R&B notes.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m so proud of the woman I\u2019ve allowed myself to become through the making of this album and every version of me that had to exist to get here,\u201d Starr wrote on Instagram<\/a> on release week.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an interview with Variety<\/a>, the singer said moving to New York inspired the new music: \u201cI feel like I was a different person in New York than I was in any part of the world, and I just liked who I was,\u201d she said, explaining that as a woman in her 20s, she was just \u201cacting my age. I\u2019m living my age. I just liked experiencing life, and it wasn\u2019t just about work, work, work. It was about enjoying all the work I\u2019ve done and just allowing myself to be, you know? And seeing myself from the lens of complete, and \u2018I am,\u2019 instead of \u2018I have to be.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd that\u2019s what Starrgirl is,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not really an alter ego, but it\u2019s a part of me that already is complete, does not have to perform, does not have to be. Because being a Black girl and an African girl, we grew up with, \u2018You have to be this.\u2019 There\u2019s a certain type of anxiety that is deep, layers, layers, layers, layers within you, that you just feel like you have to unlearn. But when you remove yourself from that and go deep, deep you start to understand that you don\u2019t need to be anything other than what you already are.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTrailing behind Starrgirl on Billboard\u2018s poll this week are KATSEYE\u2019s \u201cWILD,\u201d Phoebe Bridgers\u2019 Lost Weekend and Troye Sivan\u2019s \u201cShe\u2019s the Best.\u201d<\/p>\n
