\u201cThis year, you should come and stay here,\u201d invites Fontaines D.C.<\/a>\u2019s Grian Chatten<\/a>, somewhere between conviction and a deep sigh. \u201cYou can follow my lead, I can help you disappear\u201d. It\u2019s a sense of escapism and a \u201ccinematic feeling\u201d, as the frontman puts it, that drives this first taster of the band\u2019s freshly-announced upcoming James Ford<\/a>-produced fifth album, \u2018Dopamine Chamber\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been two years since the neon cyber punk rush of \u2018Romance<\/a>\u2019, where Fontaines boldly shrugged off any \u2018indie\u2019 preconceptions and other identity baggage to create a world of their own. \u201cOur albums have always questioned a sense of place,\u201d says bassist Conor \u2018Deego\u2019 Deegan in a press statement. \u201cFirst Dublin, then being away from Dublin, and then trying to find the romance elsewhere. On this record, the question became: where do you escape to?\u201d<\/p>\n

Who knows where we\u2019re going but the getting there sounds pretty epic. For Chatten, he drifted around the \u201cfaded grandeur\u201d of Venice, Vienna and Sicily in search of lyrical inspiration. Less a grand tour and more a road to hell, the journey led to a record that shuns hope to \u201creflect the ugliness honestly\u201d of where we\u2019re at to present us with \u201ca catastrophic warning\u201d.<\/p>\n

This particular postcard, one of two newbies recently debuted live alongside the shadowy menace of \u2018Six Shot Morning<\/a>\u2019, comes from a destination of tension piercing a surreal dream, a dark lullaby where the elegiac synth majesty of Depeche Mode<\/a> meets a widescreen David Lynch scene of lush strings. The sense of place is well-earned, and the longing is ultra real. While \u2018Starburster<\/a>\u2018 was a sharp shock and intake of breath, \u2018Marianne\u2019 is an opening scene set in opulent colour and dizzying sound.<\/p>\n

With a Reading & Leeds headline set around the corner<\/a> and online chatter of an impending arena and even stadium run, the most anticipated album of the year looks set to be the one to take Fontaines D.C. into the stratosphere. We\u2019ve heard the record and can confirm Chatten\u2019s claim that the pendulum has swung more towards \u201cautomation, and a loss of feeling\u201d than on \u2018Romance\u2019, pushing down firmly on the darkest part of the bruise.<\/p>\n

That predecessor was just a stepping stone for \u2018Dopamine Chamber\u2019, which follows the rabbit deeper down the hole in search of more mechanical extremes and orchestral noir flourishes to explore the true, numbing oblivion of the modern world. \u2018Marianne\u2019 is the red pill you take to come along and see the truth of it all: \u201cUnderstand this is your life, you can go on dreaming\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
