Despite the deployment of CCTV cameras, clear warning signage, and hundreds of fines issued to offenders, local representatives confirmed the level of fly-tipping left authorities with no choice but to remove the banks entirely.

Speaking on Live 95’s Limerick Today, Labour Councillor Joe Leddin detailed the extent of the problem, particularly on the Dock Road:

“Where the clothes bank is full, people are making a decision for whatever reason to discard bags of clothes literally on the footpath adjacent to the site. Apart from the fact that it’s a complete eyesore, it’s effectively illegal dumping. We’ve issued 158 fines this year alone just for the Dock Road area. From September 1st, the fine increases from €150 to €250.”

Councillor Leddin added that he has formally requested advice from the council’s Data Protection Officer to determine whether the names of individuals caught dumping on camera can be publicly published, in the hope of discouraging this behaviour by “naming and shaming”

Fianna Fáil Councillor Bridie Collins voiced frustration over the removal, noting that the actions of a small minority are now penalising responsible citizens looking to keep textiles out of landfill.

While private clothes banks remain open in certain areas, members of the public seeking to dispose of unwanted textiles are being directed to local charity shops or civic amenity facilities like the Mungret Recycling Centre.

You can listen to a full podcast of the interview here.

All Live95 News Via Live 95 Picture Library Limerick City and County Council have officially removed all public…

[5
72,61,60,608,611,607,610,609,612
post-597663","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","tag-business","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-limerick-radio","tag-limerick-today","tag-limericks-live95fm","tag-live-95","tag-live95fm","tag-live95fm-homepage
["GET
