(Image credit: NASA Goddard\/Intuitive Machines)<a id=\"elk-6778e474-9b4c-11f1-9443-d12c5aa321c9\"\/>Diameter and depth<a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-6778e500-9b4c-11f1-b848-2b83701fe8ea-0\">According to LROC Principal Investigator Mark Robinson, who&#8217;s based at the Houston company <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/intuitive-machines\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/intuitive-machines\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/intuitive-machines\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Intuitive Machines<\/a>, the newly formed impact crater is about 60 feet (18 meters) wide and appears to be less than 10 feet (3 m) deep.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The distinctive V-shaped ejecta pattern on the south side of the crater is consistent with natural impactors hitting the moon at low angles relative to the surface,&#8221; said Robinson.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/lroc.im-ldi.com\/images\/1499\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/lroc.im-ldi.com\/images\/1499\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sixth<\/a> (and final) image in LROC&#8217;s sequence of the new crater, he added, was acquired with the largest slew angle (68 degrees), presenting a view similar to what an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis<\/a> astronaut would see looking out his or her <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion<\/a> spacecraft window toward the lunar horizon.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-6778e58c-9b4c-11f1-b9b7-ed46835aa3f0\"\/>Telling tilts<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-6778e60e-9b4c-11f1-adb1-1b0ace557761\">To capture imagery of the impact site, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22106-lunar-reconnaissance-orbiter.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22106-lunar-reconnaissance-orbiter.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22106-lunar-reconnaissance-orbiter.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LRO<\/a> operators tilted the spacecraft so its cameras would point toward the target region each time the spacecraft passed about 60 miles (97 km) above the moon. In doing so, researchers could see the crater under multiple lighting conditions that revealed impact features.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>According to NASA, the LRO imagery shows bright and dark rays stretching out from the crater.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The darker streaks are made of surface dust and rocks altered over a long time by solar wind, galactic cosmic rays, and micrometeorite impacts. That mission team used Danuri&#8217;s high-resolution Lunar Terrain Imager to spot the new crater.
