{"id":599370,"date":"2026-08-20T17:32:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T17:32:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/599370\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T17:32:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T17:32:12","slug":"conor-mcgregor-sued-by-the-irish-based-zimbabwean-owner-of-a-controversial-care-company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/599370\/","title":{"rendered":"Conor McGregor sued by the Irish-based Zimbabwean owner of a controversial care company"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A ZIMBABWEAN BUSINESSMAN who owns a care company that has been embroiled in controversy in Ireland has initiated High Court proceedings against Conor McGregor.<\/p>\n<p>Gerard Chimbganda,\u00a0whose company Good People Homecare reportedly falsified garda background checks of its employees, filed court papers against the MMA fighter on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>He is being represented by Cork-based firm RDJ.<\/p>\n<p>The Irish Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/social-affairs\/2025\/08\/22\/department-cuts-firms-ukraine-accommodation-contract-over-garda-vetting-controversy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported extensively<\/a>\u00a0last year on issues surrounding Good People, which operates emergency accommodation for children in care in Co Meath.<\/p>\n<p>Reports about the business losing Tusla and Department of Justice contracts last August were subsequently shared by McGregor, who posted an image featuring Chimbganda on social media with a caption that made unfounded allegations of criminality.<\/p>\n<p>The post has been seen by more than 125,000 people and been shared hundreds of times in the 12 months since it was published.<\/p>\n<p>Chimbganda launched High Court proceedings against McGregor just days before the one-year deadline for him to take a defamation case expired.<\/p>\n<p>An individual who sues for defamation in Ireland is normally required to make a claim within a year of the allegedly defamatory statement being published.<\/p>\n<p>The Journal\u00a0has contacted Chimbganda for comment, though no response was received by the time of publication.<\/p>\n<p>McGregor has been involved in a number of civil cases in the Irish courts in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, he was deemed liable for sexually assaulting Nikita Hand in the Beacon Hotel on 9 December 2018, with the jury in the case awarding Hand over \u20ac248,000 in damages.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/court-of-appeal-conor-mcgregor-nikita-hand-6778786-Jul2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he was also ordered to pay her legal costs<\/a>, estimated to be around \u20ac1.3 million.<\/p>\n<p>In April, he settled a separate case involving his former sparring partner and friend Artem Lobov over an alleged agreement relating to the whiskey brand Proper No Twelve.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A ZIMBABWEAN BUSINESSMAN who owns a care company that has been embroiled in controversy in Ireland has initiated&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":599371,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[1714,54,27645,254055,254056,42,73,43,40,38,41,39],"class_list":["post-599370","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-conor-mcgregor","tag-courts","tag-defamation","tag-gerard-chimbganda","tag-good-people-homecare","tag-headlines","tag-high-court","tag-news","tag-top-news","tag-top-stories","tag-topnews","tag-topstories"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/599370","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=599370"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/599370\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/599371"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=599370"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=599370"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=599370"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
