With such a name, it was just a matter of time before seeing travellers\u2019 watches coming back to the Escale collection<\/a> of Louis Vuitton<\/a> \u2013 remember that escale is French for stopover. The inaugural version of this watch, first released in 2014 as a worldtimer featuring a highly distinctive dial with micro-painted flags, caused quite a sensation and became rather emblematic for the brand. When LV relaunched the Escale in 2024<\/a>, back then a time-only model, it felt a bit like a letdown, as if something was missing. Looking back in the mirror, we can now understand that these classic watches were meant to establish the new design language. Earlier this year, travellers\u2019 watches came back<\/a>, to our great delight, including a revamped version of the much-appreciated Worldtime<\/a>. Next to it was another watch. A bit more discreet, deceptively simpler, but no less practical as a travel companion and undeniably elegant: the Louis Vuitton Escale Twin Zone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There are multiple ways to create a traveller\u2019s watch, a.k.a. a timekeeping instrument that allows you to consult multiple time zones on a single dial and to change from one time zone to another with ease (well, at least that\u2019s what we wish all of these watches would provide). The simplest and most common way is the so-called GMT watch<\/a>, equipped with an additional 24-hour hand in the centre (most often) to display an additional time zone \u2013 either home time when travelling or the time zone of your choice when home (that of your relatives or maybe another office in your company). The GMT watch is easy to use, intuitive and can be quite inexpensive. There are, however, flaws to them. First, not all GMT watches are equal, and a crucial difference must be made between office GMT and true GMT watches (more on that in this in-depth article<\/a>). Second, almost none take into account certain time zones with 30- or 45-minute offsets.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The Escale Worldtime, with a classic city disc and 24 time zones<\/p>\n

On the other side of the spectrum is the world time<\/a>, a complication invented by Louis Cottier in the 1930s, allowing the simultaneous and permanent reading of the time across 24 time zones using an adjustable city disk and a 24-hour disk. And while the visual and mechanical appeal of the classic Cottier-styled world time function is undeniable, it also has some flaws, including not taking into account these oddly offset time zones. Some have found solutions to this, but at a certain cost<\/a>. In this regard, the Escale Worldtime<\/a> is undoubtedly splendid but still relies on a display with 24 time zones.<\/p>\n

The practical solution of the Escale Twin Zone<\/p>\n

In between are so-called dual-time watches. And here, there are no rules, except to indicate two specific time zones. It can be done with sub-dials, with discs and apertures, with two separate dials\u2026 Some even have two distinct movements. For its travel-oriented collection, and next to the world time<\/a>, Louis Vuitton has created a watch that is both deceptively simple in its display and functionality, and particularly elegant in its execution. And on top of that, it does something that few watches can: it handles all existing time zones around the globe. Indeed, contrary to popular belief, there are more than 24 time zones around the globe. In fact, there are 38 time zones, with some offset by 30 or 45 minutes \u2013 it is the case, for example, in Australia or India. And then, it adds some. Or it removes some; more on that in a bit\u2026<\/p>\n

Contrary to a classic GMT watch, the Escale Twin Zone features two complete sets of hands mounted on a single axis (hours and minutes, twice). It thus goes further, solving the limitation of classic GMT watches with a 24-hour hand, with the addition of an independently adjustable minute hand that allows precise to-the-minute adjustment across all global time zones, including those with non-standard offsets. On this watch, the solid gold hands indicate local time, while the skeleton hands indicate home time when travelling.<\/p>\n

All operations are done using the crown, and you can thus adjust both times independently, and in line with any of the 38 time zones around the globe. Upon arrival at the destination, adjusting to local time is fast and intuitive. When travelling between any of the 24 standard time zones (no minute offset), the local hour hand can be adjusted forward or backwards in one-hour increments, while the skeletonised minute hand remains hidden. When needed, the latter can be adjusted independently, allowing any time zone in the world to be displayed, including those with offsets. The day\/night indicator is, as it should be, linked to home time.<\/p>\n

And then, the LV Escale Twin Zone adds something particularly elegant. When staying at home or when no additional time indication is needed, the skeleton hands can simply be hidden under the solid hands, essentially transforming this highly practical traveller\u2019s watch into a sleek time-only timepiece. Only the day\/night indicator at the top of the engraved globe hints at its multi-time zone capability.<\/p>\n

A watch of great elegance<\/p>\n

As said in the title, the Louis Vuitton Escale Twin Zone, in addition to its sheer practicality, is also a pretty face\u2026 At least, it is to me. As part of the Escale collection, it retains the singular case of the range, with the design reintroduced in 2024<\/a>. Measuring 40mm in diameter and made in 18k rose gold, it carries multiple references to the brand\u2019s historic trunks, starting with the distinctive lugs shaped like the angled form and riveted exterior of the brass brackets and corners found on LV trunks. Those are finished manually with contrasting surfaces, including polished bevels and decorative rivets. The rest of the case is either brushed (flanks) or polished (bezel) and paired with a domed sapphire crystal. The octagonal crown is yet another classic LV touch.<\/p>\n

On the wrist, the diameter makes for an easy watch to wear, with relatively short lugs. The thickness, measured at 12.5mm, appears quite substantial on paper but never problematic once worn. The watch is paired with an \u201cArroyo grey\u201d saffiano calf leather strap, which works brilliantly with the pink gold case. Something particularly noticeable with this watch, which contributes greatly to its appeal, is the elegance and coherence of its colours, soft and warm, never ostentatious and yet discreetly luxurious.<\/p>\n

The same colour combination continues on the dial, which pairs a grey, sunburst satin-finished centre dial, with engraved meridians and parallels and an opaline flange. The latter is also home to a pearl-like minute track with gold dots and classic riveted applied gold markers, another subtle reference to the LV trunks, which are found at cardinal points. Once again, there\u2019s great coherence in the choice of colours and textures here, with a watch that evokes travel, while its world timer counterpart is more obvious in its intentions.<\/p>\n

Under the sapphire back, which is framed by a gold ring with a plaque engraved with the watch\u2019s serial number, is calibre LFT VO15.01, a modern automatic movement conceived and manufactured in-house at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. Identical in concept to the smaller movement introduced last year in the Convergence<\/a> and the Spin Time models<\/a>, it relies on a central gold oscillating weight and stores a comfortable 68-hour power reserve. It runs at 4Hz, and the decoration is classic LV, with sandblasted bridges, polished bevels and colourless jewels.<\/p>\n
