Action movie sequels are notoriously hit and miss, and while there are a handful of standouts<\/a> that outperform and even transcend the original, like Terminator 2, Aliens, and Top Gun: Maverick, there are also resounding flops like xXx: State of the Union and A Good Day to Die Hard. That hasn’t stopped studios from betting against the odds in hopes of cashing in on an original film’s breakout success.<\/p>\n

Jason Statham’s new action thriller just launched into theaters, so it’s still too early to forecast the film’s box office prospects, but the actor’s co-star is already pitching a sequel and where the story could go next. Speaking with MovieWeb, Mutiny<\/a> star Annabelle Wallis said she’s hoping for a follow-up story that would give her battle-hardened character, Angie Ellis, a break.<\/p>\n

“Maybe Mutiny on, you know, a more luxurious yacht we happen to stumble across. And it’s filled with champagne and caviar, but we don’t really want it. But we have to have it because we’re trapped. Mutiny on a luxury cruise. So that’s the fun premise. We can go from the boat to any other kind of, anywhere, really. So let’s see, let’s pray for that.”<\/p>\n

Wallis is obviously joking with the throwaway sequel pitch, but it’s not so wild considering Hollywood has already gambled on a film with a similar premise. Speed was practically begging for a sequel following its box office success, and its lead stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock even considered reprising their roles<\/a>. Speed was a completed story, however, and Speed 2: Cruise Control’s plot didn’t really make sense. Guess where that sequel’s story is set.<\/p>\n

Mutiny is a self-contained movie that doesn’t really need a follow-up, but it has established well-rounded protagonists that could easily be transplanted into an off-shoot film or direct sequel. Statham has also reprised memorable roles in sequels to Transporter and Mechanic, and there’s no reason he couldn’t do Mutiny 2 after doing Meg 2: The Trench. Besides, Hollywood has a knack for greenlighting wild sequels, so it’s worth a shot (we’re still waiting for yet another Expendables and Fast & Furious installment).<\/p>\n

In any case, a Mutiny sequel’s prospects depend on box office success, which is attainable given the film’s $40 million budget. However, Amazon recently fumbled the ball when it accidentally leaked the entire movie on its streaming service, and the consequences for that probably can’t be overstated.<\/p>\n

Mutiny is also garnering dismissive reviews from critics calling the film sluggish, shallow, and middling \u2014 it currently has a 50% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, others see its merits as a meat-and-potatoes action thriller<\/a> that’s unburdened by plot twists and contrivancies. Mutiny is a formulaic, no-nonsense action film with zero camp and a hard-hitting protagonist, and that’s more than enough for those looking for an enjoyable popcorn flick.<\/p>\n
