{"id":601483,"date":"2026-08-22T19:52:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-22T19:52:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/601483\/"},"modified":"2026-08-22T19:52:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-22T19:52:25","slug":"new-cork-initiative-giving-cancer-patients-their-freedom-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/601483\/","title":{"rendered":"New Cork initiative giving cancer patients their \u2018freedom back\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">An initiative that offers cancer patients the opportunity to self-administer a life-saving drug in their own home has been launched by the HSE South West.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The Cancer Centre at\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.echolive.ie\/corknews\/arid-41896714.html\">CUH<\/a> is the first centre in the country to offer the Herceptin in the Home programme.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Herceptin is a life-saving drug used to fight HER-2 positive breast cancer by stopping the cells from spreading and helping the body to destroy these cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">It is a maintenance drug prescribed for people following their cancer surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy, with patients receiving it via injection every three weeks for life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Clinical nurse specialist and project lead, Helen O\u2019Shea, said the aim is to both improve access and convenience for patients receiving Herceptin, and use the programme to inform the wider development of home-based and community-supported systemic anti-cancer therapy pathways across Cork and Kerry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Professor Dearbhaile Collins, clinical director of cancer services at HSE South West, said the initiative will have a profound impact on the daily lives of people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cLiving with cancer is incredibly tough, and spending hours in a hospital adds a lot of stress,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cHerceptin in the Home allows these women to live well with cancer. My ambition would be to grow and roll out this service region-wide across Cork and Kerry and potentially treat other types of cancer the same way.\u201d\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Katie Cooke, pharmacist at CUH, said that by bringing Herceptin directly into patients\u2019 homes, \u201cwe are giving them their time back\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThis is about making treatment easier, safer, and much more comfortable,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cIt is a first for Ireland.
