Every new season opens with talk of a team winning the transfer window. It is not the same as winning on the pitch and Tottenham found out the hard way after being run out of west London by Brentford, whose dominance made a mockery of suggestions that Spurs are about to take off after casting off the shackles of Levynomics with a summer of relentless spending.<\/p>\n
Spurs, whose outlay on new signings will soon surpass \u00a3300 million, were battered, bruised and embarrassed long before the end. They failed to do the basics against superior opponents and can count themselves fortunate it finished only 3-0 to Brentford, who made light of their inferior resources by opening their second season under Keith Andrews with a dominant win.<\/p>\n
Mamadou Sangar\u00e9, who looks a bargain after joining from Lens for \u00a339 million, was key to an outstanding display from the hosts. The Malian midfielder outshone Sandro Tonali, who became Spurs\u2019 record signing this summer, and is further evidence of Brentford\u2019s canny recruitment.<\/p>\n
It will worry Roberto De Zerbi that his side appeared to believe an extravagant transfer window meant they could stroll to victory. Some players chickened out of challenges, others were lazy with their passing and when all the elements of a shocking performance were put together it was not hard to work out why Brentford spent the first half doing as they pleased, to the extent the hosts must have been disappointed they were only 2-0 up at half-time.<\/p>\n
Spurs, whose spending in their first summer without Daniel Levy as chair showed their determination not to spend another year listening to taunts about trips to Lincoln, could not have been weaker. They had three new faces in their back four \u2013 Andrew Robertson was at left back while Jan Paul van Hecke partnered Marcos Senesi in the middle \u2013 but Brentford found wide open spaces from the start, created havoc with crosses from the wings and had chances to score before the opening goal arrived in the 12th minute.<\/p>\n
Sangar\u00e9, impressive in Ligue 1 last season, was at the heart of a slick move. The midfielder took possession on the right and encountered little resistance as he drove forward. Spurs merely gawped, nobody reacting as Igor Thiago dropped off to combine with Sangar\u00e9, who burst on to the striker\u2019s clever layoff before cutting the ball back for Keane Lewis-Potter to run in from left back and beat Antonin Kinsky from close range.<\/p>\n

Much is made of Brentford\u2019s threat from set pieces, but this was proof they can be just as effective in open play. Spurs were sliced apart and they continued to ship openings during the early stages. Thiago headed against the bar and Dango Ouattara twice went through on goal, only to take a heavy touch on both occasions.<\/p>\n
While Spurs have been busy with their big refurbishment Brentford have benefited from a summer of stability. Sangar\u00e9, the one eye-catching addition, was part of a midfield that swamped Lucas Bergvall, Conor Gallagher and Tonali, who did not look \u00a3100 million well spent. Brentford, so well drilled by Andrews, were rampant. Vitaly Janelt and Mathias Jensen were excellent alongside Sangar\u00e9, Kevin Schade tormented Archie Gray on the left and it was not until Brentford were 3-0 up early in the second half that Spurs created a chance of any note.<\/p>\n
De Zerbi will hope that bringing in Omar Marmoush and Savinho will add more bite in attack. If only disappointing displays from Richarlison, Mathys Tel and Mikey Moore were the only problem for Spurs, though. There were frailties in every department and the second goal underlined the difference between the sides, Bergvall timid in a challenge with Jensen, Kinsky unable to push the Brentford player\u2019s shot to safety and Janelt quickest to gobble up the rebound.<\/p>\n
There were boos from the away end at half-time. De Zerbi reacted, Rodrigo Bentancur replacing the wretched Bergvall and Gallagher\u2019s removal allowing Mateus Fernandes to come on for his debut after his \u00a385 million move from West Ham, but Brentford did not need long to stamp out any hope of a fightback.<\/p>\n
It was nothing more than a simple corner routine for the hosts to go three ahead in the 49th minute. Nathan Collins was free to nod down at the far post and although Kinsky saved well from Sangar\u00e9 the ball dropped for Michael Kayode to smash into the roof of the net.<\/p>\n
