Sometimes you just have to say it in the clearest fashion possible: After years of stepping back pretty publicly from the franchise he\u2019s most closely associated with\u2014appearing in extremely limited voice cameo roles, and giving interviews<\/a> where he talks about how the whole aim of the current franchise is to get away from him and his most iconic character\u2014Bruce Campbell has straight-up told fans that he\u2019s done playing Ash Williams in the Evil Dead\u00a0franchise. \u201cApologies if this news seems new,\u201d Campbell wrote on social media this weekend<\/a>, noting that it can be difficult to get this kind of info out to everybody. \u201cI tapped out after [Ash Vs. Evil Dead<\/a>].\u201d<\/p>\n

And while we\u2019ll note that that \u201ctap out,\u201d after the conclusion of the Starz TV series in 2018, wasn\u2019t entirely\u00a0complete\u2014Campbell recorded new Ash dialogue for\u00a0Evil Dead: The Game\u00a0in 2022, and provided a small voice cameo for Lee Cronin\u2019s\u00a0Evil Dead Rise\u00a0in 2023\u2014it now sounds like he\u2019s formally bowing out of the good\/bad\/guy with the gun game. Further in the post\u2014itself a quote-tweet of one loudly declaring \u201cBruce Campbell has officially retired from any and all Ash William roles\u201d\u2014Campbell writes that \u201cMostly, the reasons were ability and interest, in equal measure. I didn\u2019t want Ash to be compromised by declining skills and as a borderline Geezer, my interests have diverged.\u201d That being said, he ended by asserting, \u201cI\u2019ll always love Evil Dead to death \u2013 literally.\u201d<\/p>\n

Campbell has presumably been fielding a lot of questions on this topic lately, given that he\u2019s currently stumping for his new film Ernie & Emma, which he stars in, directed, and wrote. The film, about a widower who takes his wife\u2019s ashes on a cross-country road trip, is about as far from gore-soaked horror as you can get, which feels very much the point. Meanwhile, Campbell\u2019s also living with a recent cancer diagnosis, which he revealed to the world in March<\/a>. He gave an update on his condition<\/a> during a podcast appearance last month, telling fans, \u201cI think I\u2019m doing as well as you can do for having cancer.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
