NASA is preparing to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space
\nTelescope, a new observatory designed to study some of the biggest
\nmysteries in the universe, including dark energy, dark matter and
\nexoplanets. The launch is scheduled for August 30, 2026, aboard a
\nSpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA\u2019s
\nKennedy Space Center in Florida.<\/p>\n
The Roman Space Telescope is designed to survey enormous areas
\nof the sky and provide a much broader view of the universe than
\nprevious space telescopes. Scientists hope it will help them
\nunderstand how the universe has evolved, why its expansion is
\naccelerating and how galaxies and planetary systems form.<\/p>\n
Roman will also search for exoplanets \u2014 worlds orbiting stars
\noutside our Solar System. Its wide field of view will allow
\nastronomers to study huge numbers of stars and potentially discover
\nthousands of new planets.<\/p>\n
The telescope will be launched by SpaceX\u2019s Falcon Heavy, one of
\nthe most powerful rockets currently in operation. The rocket uses
\nthree Falcon 9-derived booster cores to generate the enormous
\namount of thrust needed to carry heavy payloads into space.<\/p>\n
NASA teams completed the mission\u2019s Flight Readiness Review on
\nAugust 21, confirming that the spacecraft, launch vehicle and
\nground systems were ready to enter the final stage of preparations.
\nThe telescope is being integrated with SpaceX hardware before it is
\nenclosed inside the rocket\u2019s protective payload fairing.<\/p>\n
After launch, Roman will travel to the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point
\n2 (L2), located about one million miles (1.5 million km) from
\nEarth. This region offers a stable environment and allows the
\ntelescope to maintain a clear view of the cosmos while minimizing
\ninterference from the Sun, Earth and Moon.<\/p>\n
Roman\u2019s primary mirror is 2.4 meters (7.9 feet) across \u2014 about
\nthe same size as Hubble\u2019s mirror \u2014 but the telescope is designed to
\nsee a much larger area of the sky at once. NASA says its field of
\nview will be at least 100 times wider than Hubble\u2019s, potentially
\nallowing Roman to measure light from around a billion galaxies over
\nthe course of its mission.<\/p>\n
Another remarkable feature is the amount of data Roman is
\nexpected to generate. The observatory is designed to produce
\nroughly 10 terabytes of scientific data per day, creating an
\nenormous archive for astronomers around the world. Its primary
\nmission is planned to last five years, with the possibility of
\nextending it to about ten years.<\/p>\n
If the launch goes ahead as planned, Roman could become one of
\nNASA\u2019s most important tools for studying the \u201cdark\u201d side of the
\nuniverse \u2014 and its observations may help answer questions that have
