Bauche spent 25 years working for the City of North Battleford as director of the Allen Sapp Gallery. During that time, he met artists whose work and stories eventually inspired the Invisible Winds exhibition.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the fact that it\u2019s opening in the Battlefords right now really is a credit to what the Battlefords has been able to offer this exhibition,\u201d Bauche said. \u201cAnd in many respects, the exhibition wouldn\u2019t be what it is without my time in the Battlefords and the people that I continue to work with and know there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Through his work in the arts, Bauche learned the power of combining an image with the voice of the person behind it.<\/p>\n
Each portrait in Invisible Winds is accompanied by a QR code that allows visitors to hear the participant tell their own story.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got people from six years old to 80-year-old, who are telling their story,\u201d Bauche said. \u201cThere is a really powerful dimension that art offers where we can bring together the image and the story, and in this particular case, the story that people tell is a very personal thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bauche said the exhibition is intended to bring hidden struggles into the open, particularly because many people do not talk publicly about mental health challenges.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe more we keep them hidden, the more it ends up being that we suffer from them,\u201d he said. \u201cBut if we can begin to talk about them, if we can begin to acknowledge them, then others will hear that story and realize that it\u2019s legitimate for them to share their story.\u201d<\/p>\n
For some participants, telling their stories also became part of their healing process. Bauche recalled one participant describing the experience as being like \u201c13 years of therapy,\u201d allowing her to reflect on what she had experienced and recognize how far she had come.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s remarkable about the exhibition is how incredibly redemptive it is,\u201d Bauche said. \u201cIt deals with some very difficult topics, but remarkably, every person in the exhibition, regardless of what it is that they were confronted with in their life, somehow arrived at a point where they\u2019re able to say, and now because of this, I can make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bauche said the exhibition ultimately shows that struggles are not limited to any particular group.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no place for us to think of anybody as marginalized,\u201d Bauche said. \u201cThe struggle that we have is shared universally, regardless of who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n
He hopes visitors leave with a greater willingness to listen to the experiences of others.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to stop and take time and hear each other\u2019s stories,\u201d Bauche said. \u201cStories can save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
Invisible Winds opens to the public at the Chapel Gallery in North Battleford on Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. An address, welcome and background on the exhibition will follow at 6:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
