Patients often normalise their pain as an inevitable part of getting older, telling themselves it is normal, but this should not be the case. There can often be fear of what treatment might entail, and specifically the idea of undergoing surgery. That apprehension is a completely normal response.

However, what often happens is a process of gradual adaptation, people slowly give up activities they love, like walking, running, going to the gym, gardening, or playing with grandchildren. They wait until they experience a severe loss of function or miss out on major life moments before taking action. But putting off a simple GP consultation only prolongs unnecessary suffering.”

Q: Is it true that joint replacement surgery is only for older age groups?
Mr Niall McGoldrick: “That is a common myth. We are seeing a clear global trend where the number of joint replacements in younger, active age groups, such as people in their 40s and 50s, is increasing.

In years gone by, the conversation around joint replacement was driven purely by end-stage pain relief. Today, it is equally functional restoration. Modern hip and knee implants are exceptionally durable, with more than 90 per cent lasting 20 years . Younger patients often have fantastic rehabilitation potential, and undergoing treatment earlier allows them to return to high levels of physical activity rather than living through their active years in pain.”

Q: Taking that first step to visit a GP can feel daunting. What should patients focus on during their appointment?
Mr Niall McGoldrick: “The key is to be open, honest, and to focus on function, not just pain. Your GP likely knows you very well, making them the ideal partner to start this discussion.

When you sit down for your appointment, detail how the joint issues impact your day-to-day life:

Impact on routine: Does the pain wake you from sleep? Does it prevent you from climbing stairs, driving, or putting on your shoes and socks comfortably?
Specific limitations: How far can you walk before needing to stop? What hobbies or physical activities have you had to give up?
Current management: What pain relief have you tried, and is it no longer working?

When basic functional tasks become a struggle, it is a sign that you may need to look beyond temporary pain relief or physiotherapy toward an assessment with a specialist.”

Q: Many patients fear a long, grueling recovery process. What does modern recovery actually look like?
Mr Niall McGoldrick: “Post-operative care has made massive leaps forward compared to 20 or 25 years ago, when patients routinely spent a week or more in hospital. Today, thanks to enhanced recovery protocols, modern technology, and early physiotherapy intervention, recovery is swift and predictable.

At Blackrock Health, we focus on mobilisation immediately after surgery, getting patients up and sitting or walking shortly after surgery to normalise movement. In selected cases, patients can even be managed as outpatients and go home the same day. However, the majority of our patients are discharged safely within one to two days. In fact, research shows almost 40 per cent of patients are up and walking within 24 to 48 hours, with post-surgical pain managed effectively through proactive strategies.”2

Q: What role does the patient play in ensuring a successful outcome?
Mr Niall McGoldrick: “Recovery is a collaborative partnership. While the surgical team takes care of the technical procedure, the long-term success relies heavily on the rehabilitation journey between the patient and their physiotherapist.

What you put into your recovery directly dictates what you get out of it. Patients who engage actively with their focused physiotherapy, follow guidance, and commit to daily mobilisation routinely recover very quickly and achieve outstanding long-term mobility.”

Q: What is your key advice for anyone putting off seeking help for joint pain?
Mr Niall McGoldrick: “Don’t leave it until you are so debilitated that your quality of life has shrunk and rehabilitation becomes harder. The sooner you seek help, the faster and smoother your recovery journey will be.

Reclaiming your mobility starts with a single step: book an appointment with your GP, be transparent about how your joint pain is affecting your daily life and discuss a referral for an orthopaedic evaluation. Reclaiming your stride changes everything.”

For more information about orthopaedic care and joint replacement at Blackrock Health, visit: www.blackrockhealth.com.

References:

Blackrock Health Orthopaedic Research (Empathy Research, 2023–2024).
National Office of Clinical Audit (NOCA) Data.

“Reclaim Your Stride” Campaign Urges Early Action on Joint Pain and Mobility Research from Blackrock Health reveals up…

[10
256423,256424,103,61,60,256425,256426,256427
post-605004","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-blackrock-health","tag-cappagh-national-orthopaedics-hospital","tag-health","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-joint-replacement","tag-niall-mcgoldrick","tag-reclaim-your-stride-the-first-step
["GET
