Living in murky, brackish water it is one of only three river shark species globally \u2014 and is almost impossible to see in the wild. It\u2019s never been photographed alive. The only evidence biologists have to go by is when one turns up dead as bycatch. Even then, they might just find a fin.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y600063b6rl36sasm6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The critically endangered species lives across parts of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Myanmar, but it\u2019s thought most populations are dwindling. An estimated 240 adults remain according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The last published sighting of a Ganges shark near its namesake river was in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.int-res.com\/articles\/esr2019\/40\/n040p065.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2017<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y600073b6r68p40ctt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But after decades of sporadic sightings across South and Southeast Asia, the last stronghold of the Ganges shark may have been found in a remote corner of Indonesia. New fieldwork now offers fresh hope that it might have a future there.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y600083b6rdpohnyxx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2023, researcher Michael Grant of James Cook University, Australia, led an exploratory mission with partners from the University of Borneo Tarakan and Hasanuddin University to North Kalimantan. Indonesian Borneo was not known to be part of the shark\u2019s range. But while visiting a village bordering the Sesayap River, Grant encountered a fisherman who accidentally caught 17 Ganges sharks in a week. That was more than had been identified worldwide in the past 20 years, said Grant.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/200817164027-arapaima-1.jpg\" alt=\"A native to Amazonia's rivers and lakes, the &lt;strong&gt;arapaima gigas&lt;\/strong&gt; is one of the biggest freshwater fish in the world, measuring an impressive &lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" target=\"_blank\"\/>10 feet long and weighing a whopping 485 pounds. Known to locals as the pirarucu, the air-breathing giant preys on plants and animals, destroying its catch with its sharp tongue. Pirarucu has been historically overfished, but conservation efforts are restoring numbers. It is &lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" target=\"_blank\"\/>one of the world&#8217;s largest catfish and among the largest of Europe&#8217;s freshwater fish species. The long-bodied, scaleless creature can reach 15 feet in length and a weight of 660 pounds. Dubbed the&lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" target=\"_blank\"\/>&#8220;river wolf,&#8221; this predatory species &#8211; which can weigh as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.org\/content\/new-nature-reserve-provides-sanctuary-threatened-siberian-taimen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">230 pounds<\/a> and grow seven feet long &#8211; dominates its habitats in Europe and Asia, feeding on everything from waterfowl and salmon to bats and small land mammals. The alligator gar is found only in the southern waters of the United States. A large freshwater fish measuring up to &lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" target=\"_blank\"\/>10 feet in length, its relatively stout beak resembles the snout of its namesake, the alligator. Residing predominantly in the Nile and other African rivers and lakes, the Nile perch can grow to &lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" target=\"_blank\"\/>six feet long and weigh 300 pounds and is identifiable by its the green or brown scales decorating its long body and rounded tail. It&#8217;s a prized game fish, as well as an important food source. It inhabits the Caspian Sea and Black Sea, in Eastern Europe\/Central Asia, traveling upriver to spawn in the spring or summer. Listed as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/species\/10269\/3187455\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">critically endangered<\/a>, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) says its population has diminished as a result of the pursuit of the sturgeon&#8217;s meat and unfertilized eggs, which are touted as one of the world&#8217;s finest caviars. &#8221; class=&#8221;image__dam-img image__dam-img&#8211;loading&#8221; onload=&#8217;this.classList.remove(&#8216;image__dam-img&#8211;loading&#8217;)&#8217; onerror=&#8221;imageLoadError(this)&#8221; height=&#8221;1992&#8243; width=&#8221;3000&#8243; loading=&#8217;lazy&#8217;\/&gt;<\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787742015_275_w_1200.jpeg\" alt=\"Growing up to &lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" target=\"_blank\"\/>10 feet long and 660 pounds, the Mekong giant catfish is critically endangered, largely due to infrastructure development, such as the building of dams, along the Mekong river, which hinder catfish migration and threaten their ability to reproduce, according to the WWF. &#8221; class=&#8221;image__dam-img image__dam-img&#8211;loading&#8221; onload=&#8217;this.classList.remove(&#8216;image__dam-img&#8211;loading&#8217;)&#8217; onerror=&#8221;imageLoadError(this)&#8221; height=&#8221;2002&#8243; width=&#8221;3000&#8243; loading=&#8217;lazy&#8217;\/&gt;<\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787742016_577_w_1200.jpeg\" alt=\"&lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" target=\"_blank\"\/>Cambodia&#8217;s national fish, the giant barb (also known as the giant carp) resides in rivers and floodplain areas in the Maeklong, Mekong and Chao Phraya river basins of Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. The freshwater species is worthy of its name, growing up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/fisheries\/ANS\/erss\/uncertainrisk\/ERSS-Catlocarpio-siamensis-FINAL-September2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">three meters (9.8 feet)<\/a> and an astonishing 661 pounds.&#8221; class=&#8221;image__dam-img image__dam-img&#8211;loading&#8221; onload=&#8217;this.classList.remove(&#8216;image__dam-img&#8211;loading&#8217;)&#8217; onerror=&#8221;imageLoadError(this)&#8221; height=&#8221;2000&#8243; width=&#8221;3000&#8243; loading=&#8217;lazy&#8217;\/&gt;<\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787742016_909_w_1200.jpeg\" alt=\"The &lt;strong&gt;golden mahseer&lt;\/strong&gt;, a game fish of the carp family, inhabits lakes and rivers of India and Southeast Asia. Nicknamed &lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" target=\"_blank\"\/>&#8220;the tiger of the river,&#8221; mahseer are known for their strong jaws, large scales and enormity, growing as long as 6.5 feet and weighing 200 pounds. The mahseer has faced drastic declines in population as it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwfindia.org\/about_wwf\/priority_species\/threatened_species\/golden_mahseer\/#:~:text=Conservation%20Issues&amp;text=There%20is%20dearth%20of%20information,tolerate%20a%20modified%20water%20environment.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">threatened<\/a> by habitat degradation from pollution, and overfishing, says the WWF. &#8221; class=&#8221;image__dam-img image__dam-img&#8211;loading&#8221; onload=&#8217;this.classList.remove(&#8216;image__dam-img&#8211;loading&#8217;)&#8217; onerror=&#8221;imageLoadError(this)&#8221; height=&#8221;2000&#8243; width=&#8221;3000&#8243;\/&gt;<\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787742017_997_w_1200.jpeg\" alt=\"A &lt;strong&gt;Mekong giant freshwater stingray&lt;\/strong&gt; is pictured sliding along the bottom of sandy, blue waters. Giant freshwater stingrays can be found throughout East Asia, Southeast Asia and Australia, and some species grow up to half the length of a bus and weigh half a ton according to the &lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" target=\"_blank\"\/>WWF. In the Mekong basin the freshwater stingray can grow to 16 feet and buries itself in sandy river bottom, detecting its prey &#8212; fish and crustaceans &#8212; by sensing other animals&#8217; electrical fields. Researchers analyzed samples and discovered many were from Ganges sharks.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4032\" width=\"3024\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y6000c3b6ricadfwqo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The find led the IUCN SSC Shark Specialist Group to designate the Sesayap River an Important Shark and Ray Area (ISRA) in 2024.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y6000d3b6roiende06@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In May, the team of researchers returned to investigate further and kickstart protection of what Grant called \u201cpotentially the last viable population in the world.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000e3b6rtjnwpquu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt was a resounding success,\u201d he said, with most of the communities they spoke to \u201chappy to be the stewards of this species.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000f3b6rraxmush5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fortunately, Grant believes the population is unlikely to be exploited deliberately.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000g3b6rgass0b6r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere doesn\u2019t seem to be any livelihood dependence or cultural significance\u201d attached to the shark, he explained. Villagers don\u2019t like its taste, he said, and its thin fins aren\u2019t attractive to the Asian shark fin market. The risk of the animal being poached or trafficked is small, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000h3b6rp4bm5lb1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Unfortunately, the shark is still killed accidentally \u2014 and there\u2019s a chance the situation could deteriorate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000i3b6r5y7kpsa2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The fisherman who caught 17 Ganges sharks in 2023 did so with a hook and line, which are used to fish for snapper and croaker in the river, said Grant. In an interview with researchers, he told them he\u2019d caught sharks in a gillnet too (a fishing method unusual for the area, Grant noted).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000j3b6rtuf5hgaq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the issue of bycatch is bigger than one fisherman. The 2026 fieldwork found further evidence of Ganges sharks \u2014 raising the total to 43 between both trips \u2014 though most of it was in the form of fins found drying in villages. How these sharks died is unclear.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000k3b6r6ubkaurc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFisheries can be very dynamic,\u201d Grant added. Fishers may go on to target another species, he speculated, using gear that increases the chance of Ganges shark bycatch.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000l3b6rhqbe303b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Introducing legislation, whether prohibiting certain fishing gear, or establishing fishery exclusion zones before fishing practices change, is vital, Grant believes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000m3b6ryfarxg7r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sarah Fowler, scientific adviser at the Save Our Seas Foundation, who was not involved in the research, said the number of Ganges sharks found in North Kalimantan was \u201cextraordinary.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000n3b6rkrfsdzpc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fowler was concerned the population could be swept up in an emerging bycatch threat: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0308597X21003079\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the growing, multibillion-dollar fish maw industry<\/a>. Fish maw \u2014 dried swim bladder \u2014 is a delicacy in China, a percentage of which is sourced illegally.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gettyimages-519378352.jpg\" alt=\"A shop in Hong Kong sells different varieties of dried fish maw.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3173\" width=\"4760\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000o3b6rkrf7h576@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anecdotally, Fowler said she\u2019d heard trawlers were moving into areas of Kalimantan that had been fished sustainably for generations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000p3b6r2urh9th8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFish maw has a much greater range of bycatch than shark fin fisheries,\u201d she said. One of the species fished for its swim bladder, she said, was the croaker.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000q3b6rlycyqb6n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe Ganges shark \u2026 is definitely in the firing line,\u201d Fowler added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000s3b6r8k2rx5cc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            How do you protect a species when it\u2019s nearly impossible to study? This is the conundrum faced by specialists working with Ganges sharks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000t3b6rjalmmi7u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe still have very limited data about this species, but at the same time we are racing against extinction,\u201d said Simeon.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gettyimages-1238426254.jpg\" alt=\"A bull shark in the sea off Florida. The Ganges shark has sometimes been mistaken for the bull shark in the past, though the latter is not a true river shark and only spends some of its time in fresh and brackish water.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2832\" width=\"4256\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000u3b6rc64tlqmw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dr. Fahmi, principal researcher at Indonesian governmental body the National Research and Innovation Agency, was also part of the May expedition. He pointed out that elusiveness is no barrier to legal protection, and Indonesia has protected the sawfish and the Kai stingaree, two species that are extremely rare (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/species\/60096\/124438543\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the latter has only ever been documented twice<\/a>).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000v3b6runo0vesl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He said that the team will share its findings and recommendations with local government, which can be escalated to a \u201cnational-level urgency,\u201d which could prompt regulation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000w3b6rhzmac2vg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The process will also include public consultation and an assessment of the possible impact of protective measures on rural communities with few job prospects outside fishing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000x3b6rprp2hw9e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Grant described the legal pathway for protecting the Ganges shark as \u201ca pretty open and shut case,\u201d but Fahmi struck a note of caution.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000y3b6regat6xl7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe government needs comprehensive data on species status, distribution, population trends, threats, current uses, and value to local communities, but such information remains lacking,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y7000z3b6ri9it0j23@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It may be more effective to introduce area-based protections rather than species-specific measures, he suggested, as the Ganges shark shares its habitat in North Kalimantan with species that are already protected, including Irrawaddy dolphins and giant freshwater rays.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y700103b6rn8nzso58@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Legal protection is one thing; ensuring it\u2019s enforced is another. In 2023, the team surveyed 221 fishers in North Kalimantan and found only one was aware that three species of ray in the area were nationally protected.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2r3kx9y.jpg\" alt=\"Used fishing net cages in the Sesayap River, North Kalimantan.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1407\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y700113b6r1361fbt0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Simeon said that despite there being no scientific records of Ganges sharks in the region before 2023, locals must have known about them for generations. \u201cFor me, this is a good reminder that modern science cannot work alone,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y700123b6rxoat8whg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Indonesian academic said the locals\u2019 willingness to protect the species \u201cneeds to be supported by science and by the government.\u201d She advocated for incentives such as better education facilities, healthcare or services.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y700133b6rwf9hqe5r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cConservation will be much more sustainable if protecting the species also brings tangible benefits to the people who live alongside it,\u201d she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y800143b6rwfhks6uq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With other Ganges shark populations possibly pushed beyond the brink, there\u2019s optimism that the one found in northeast Borneo is numerous enough to mount a last stand.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y800153b6rrkwtosie@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Protecting the species will be challenging, but not impossible, Simeon believes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y800163b6rayd9bbp5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think keeping that hope alive is important. We now know that this population exists, and that gives us an opportunity to act before it is too late.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt33z8y800173b6r28inwyup@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Grant, like so many experts in his field, shared that he had never seen a Ganges shark alive.
