A car carrying a couple drove off a bridge on to the M50<\/a> motorway in Dublin<\/a> on Wednesday afternoon into traffic. <\/p>\n

The couple, a man and woman aged in their 80s, were removed from the scene for treatment of serious injuries. No other injuries have been reported.<\/p>\n

The couple are believed to have been driving from Dublin Airport southbound on the M50 when they exited the motorway at Junction 10, near the Ballymount slip road.<\/p>\n

Garda\u00ed<\/a> are investigating the circumstances in which the car appeared to have driven off the bridge at the Ballymount exit on to the traffic below. <\/p>\n

Video posted online in the aftermath of the incident appears to show a breached barrier at the beginning of the bridge. <\/p>\n

The incident happened at about 3.20pm on Wednesday and involved a car in a single-vehicle collision, garda\u00ed said.<\/p>\n

The southbound lane of the M50 was closed and diversions put in place. It was subsequently reopened, though Transport Infrastructure Ireland<\/a> warned motorists of continued congestion in the area. <\/p>\n

The southbound queue of the M50 motorway at one point stretched back to junction one for Dublin Airport during rush hour on Wednesday. <\/p>\n

There was a heavy Garda presence at the scene. Other emergency services also attended.
