\n\tThere might not be an \u201cInsidious<\/a>: Out of the Further\u201d without franchise star Lin Shaye<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe sixth installment of the hit horror franchise was in the works, but after a behind-the-scenes change, the movie was pulled from Sony\u2019s release slate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFuck this,\u201d Shaye thought after learning of the film\u2019s cancellation.<\/p>\n

\n\tEager to still bring the story to the big screen, Shaye wrote a letter to Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman, whom she\u2019d met while filming 1998\u2019s \u201cThere\u2019s Something About Mary,\u201d pleading for the sixth movie to be made. It wasn\u2019t necessarily an act for herself, the 82-year-old scream queen says, but for the franchise\u2019s passionate fanbase. Shaye\u2019s bold move worked: Rothman agreed to greenlight the project.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt gives me chills because I don\u2019t consider myself a mover and a shaker,\u201d Shaye tells Variety, logging on to Zoom from her Los Angeles home. \u201cIt\u2019s not like I single-handedly got this movie made, but I spoke up. I think speaking up must never, ever stop. Don\u2019t ever stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tChampioning \u201cInsidious\u201d marked a pivotal moment for Shaye after spending more than five decades in an industry where she often felt she was taken less seriously as a woman. Despite making significant contributions to the film business across her diverse filmography \u2014 ranging from \u201cDead End\u201d to \u201cDumb and Dumber\u201d \u2014 there was still a lingering sense of powerlessness.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tUntil now.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m going to live until I\u2019m 250, because I\u2019m taking all this gorgeous energy that\u2019s being delivered to me in such a graceful way. I\u2019m the happiest I\u2019ve ever been,\u201d Shaye says. \u201cI don\u2019t feel powerful, but I don\u2019t feel powerless.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAs much as Shaye was ready to be heard, the world was certainly ready to listen. \u201cInsidious: Out of the Further<\/a>,\u201d from writer-director James Chase,<\/a> hit theaters on Friday, challenging \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d for the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office.\u00a0\u201cBrand New Day\u201d ultimately triumphed with a $39 million domestic total, but \u201cInsidious\u201d landed at No. 2, debuting with an impressive $25.3 million<\/a> gross against an $18 million production budget. (The movie is a Screen Gems\/Stage 6 Films\/Blumhouse Atomic Monster production. The franchise\u2019s five prior installments generated a combined $800 million worldwide against low budgets.)<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\tLin Shaye and Amelia Eve in \u201cInsidious: Out of the Further\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cInsidious\u201d debuted in 2010, introducing audiences to an alternate realm known as the Further. Shaye plays Elise Rainer, a dimension-traveling psychic who helps people fight off demons, even from the afterlife.\u00a0Although Elise was killed in the first movie, Shaye has appeared in all five subsequent films, becoming one of the franchise\u2019s most beloved characters.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cInsidious: Out of the Further\u201d follows Gemma (Amelia Eve), who can not only astral project, but can also carry objects across dimensions \u2014 including demons. But in between the jump scares and supernatural horrors is a story of motherhood and confronting the past. When Elise hears Gemma\u2019s screams for help in the Further, she doesn\u2019t hesitate to rush to the stranger\u2019s side and guides Gemma as she learns new truths behind the trauma passed down from her mother (Laura Gordon), while vowing to protect her own daughter (Island Austin).<\/p>\n

\n\tLike Gemma, Shaye cites motherhood as an important storyline in her own life, particularly when it came to having this movie made. Her letter to Rothman was inspired by moments from Shaye\u2019s childhood, when she watched her mother, Dorothy Shaye, unabashedly speak up for herself.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMy mom was a fighter,\u201d Shaye says, her voice breaking as tears well up in her eyes. \u201cAs a little girl, I remember feeling so proud that she was so strong.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThese underlying themes and emotionally relatable characters are key (perhaps even \u201cThe Last Key\u201d) to the \u201cInsidious\u201d films\u2019 continued success after 15 years. \u201cThe thing about this franchise I find really fabulous is there\u2019s underlying big issues that are tackled in a very theatrical way, but they resonate because they\u2019re not delivered to you upfront,\u201d Shaye says. \u201cIt\u2019s delivered in story.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tStorytelling is innate to the Shaye family. Her father, supermarket owner and artist Max Shaye,<\/a> told bedtime stories of a white horse flying Lin to faraway Candyland. (\u201cThere\u2019d always be pastrami trees and bushes because my dad loved deli food,\u201d she recalls, laughing.) Her brother, Robert Shaye, began making movies as a teen and went on to found New Line Cinema. And Shaye isn\u2019t looking to stop telling stories anytime soon, especially Elise\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cInsidious: The Last Key,\u201d the franchise\u2019s fourth film, which premiered in 2018, served as a prequel to Elise\u2019s story, giving audiences a glimpse at the traumatic aspects of her childhood \u2014 detailing her abusive relationship with her father and how her family perceives her supernatural abilities. But even after six movies, there\u2019s still plenty of Elise\u2019s story left to explore, as well as the supernatural realm she inhabits.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFor starters, we still don\u2019t know exactly what the Further is, and Shaye has some questions too: \u201cWhat is the Further? What happens there? Is it the same for everybody?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWill audiences ever receive some answers? Shaye isn\u2019t saying no. In fact, she\u2019s open to the possibility of future \u201cInsidious\u201d installments. \u201cI think it\u2019s really not over. I just don\u2019t think it is,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs Shaye continues to explore the concept of the beyond, she\u2019s also found herself wondering about how Elise spends her free time in the Further. She\u2019d like to picture her character alongside her golden retriever, Warren, always listening for the screams of those who need help (\u201cShe\u2019s a very keen listener,\u201d Shaye says of the character).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter more than a decade of playing Elise, Shaye still finds it difficult to fully grasp the character\u2019s hold on audiences.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPeople really do love that woman,\u201d Shaye says, describing what it felt like to hear 7,000 people chant her name at a fan event in Peru earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd I say \u2018that woman\u2019 because it\u2019s hard for me to recognize that I created that,\u201d she continues. \u201cI have trouble accepting my own success in some ways; I\u2019m\u00a0always picking: \u2018This could be better, and this could be better.\u2019 I\u2019m never quite satisfied.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut what Shaye does find satisfying is that Elise came to vivid life across this series, beyond her expectations.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is a woman who is not particularly attractive, who doesn\u2019t have anything that\u2019s very sensational about her. What\u2019s sensational about her is that she\u2019s a good listener, and that\u2019s a very important thing,\u201d Shaye says. \u201cIt\u2019s bigger than we think, in a way. Women are not really heard as much as men are; we like to think they are, but we get shut out a lot. There\u2019s more to her story.\u201d<\/p>\n
