Over the past two decades, it studied <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gamma-ray-burst.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gamma-ray-burst.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gamma-ray-burst.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gamma-ray bursts<\/a> \u2014 the most powerful explosions in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/52-the-expanding-universe-from-the-big-bang-to-today.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/52-the-expanding-universe-from-the-big-bang-to-today.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/52-the-expanding-universe-from-the-big-bang-to-today.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the universe<\/a> \u2014 and other cosmic objects and events using a trio of telescopes.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-2cd1c422-a16d-11f1-8c2e-8944921a0969-2\">But Swift&#8217;s science work is now done, and its days in orbit are numbered.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-629870d8-a16d-11f1-9542-b9e5b3d5af2e\"\/>Call to action<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-62987164-a16d-11f1-b7da-d10b09b5f04b\">In September 2025, NASA put out a call to action to save Swift, whose orbit was decaying quickly due to high solar activity. The bottom line: The observatory needed a boost to a higher orbit soon, or it would be dragged down to its death in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Arizona-based company Katalyst Space Technologies answered that call, and won a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasa-is-paying-usd30-million-for-a-1st-of-its-kind-rescue-mission-to-the-aging-swift-telescope-before-it-falls-from-space-is-it-worth-it\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasa-is-paying-usd30-million-for-a-1st-of-its-kind-rescue-mission-to-the-aging-swift-telescope-before-it-falls-from-space-is-it-worth-it\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasa-is-paying-usd30-million-for-a-1st-of-its-kind-rescue-mission-to-the-aging-swift-telescope-before-it-falls-from-space-is-it-worth-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$30 million NASA contract<\/a> to perform the re-boost. (Image credit: NASA\/GSFC)<a id=\"elk-92bd6700-a16d-11f1-9ec6-1d7707e1a9b6\"\/>Uncontrolled reentry<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-92bd6764-a16d-11f1-93eb-772a0f564d72\">&#8220;Yes, Swift will have an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/falling-space-debris-is-a-growing-worry-for-aircraft-new-research-suggests\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/falling-space-debris-is-a-growing-worry-for-aircraft-new-research-suggests\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/falling-space-debris-is-a-growing-worry-for-aircraft-new-research-suggests\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">uncontrolled reentry<\/a>,&#8221; said Alise Fisher, public affairs specialist in astrophysics within the Office of Communications at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>The spacecraft&#8217;s specific timing for reentry will depend on a number of factors, Fisher told Space.com. &#8220;Swift is not likely to reenter sooner than October. NASA will share more information as reentry approaches, following established interagency procedures for such notifications.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>NASA expects most of the Swift spacecraft to burn up as it travels through the atmosphere, Fisher said, &#8220;but some components are expected to survive reentry. The spacecraft&#8217;s science gear includes a Burst Alert Telescope, an Ultraviolet\/Optical Telescope and an X-Ray Telescope.<\/p>\n<p>So what might make it to Earth during Swift&#8217;s speedy fall through the atmosphere?<\/p>\n<p>The observatory&#8217;s &#8220;dry mass and instruments are such that it will likely disintegrate sufficiently upon reentry to not pose a ground casualty hazard,&#8221; said Darren McKnight, a senior technical fellow at LeoLabs, a company that keeps a persistent eye on what&#8217;s going on in Earth orbit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, it has both an X-ray telescope and optical telescope, so the internal workings of those devices might survive,&#8221; McKnight told Space.com.
