Views are being sought on a “once-in-a-generation reimagining of how people move through Limerick city centre”.<\/p>\n

The draft plan explores creating more direct routes, including the return of two-way traffic on Henry Street, Mallow Street and William Street.<\/p>\n

It also proposes a two-way bus corridor on the main thoroughfare, O\u2019Connell Street, between Cecil Street and Arthur\u2019s Quay.<\/p>\n

Mayor of Limerick John Moran said the city reflects a transport network designed for a different era.<\/p>\n

The last comprehensive plan dates to the 1980s, when much of the traffic passing through Limerick was travelling between Dublin and the south-west, which has long since been diverted around the city.<\/p>\n

Limerick\u2019s historic grid pattern is one of its greatest strengths, according to the mayor.<\/p>\n

“By making better use of that existing network, the draft proposals aim to simplify movement, reduce unnecessary detours and make navigating the city centre more intuitive for residents, visitors and businesses alike.<\/p>\n

“Rather than look at individual streets in isolation, the plan considers how the entire city functions as one connected network.<\/p>\n

“Every change is designed to support the next, creating a transport system that is more coherent,” Mr Moran said.<\/p>\n

The plan gives buses a greater priority on key corridors, aimed at creating a more reliable public transport network, while ensuring businesses, deliveries and access continue to be accommodated.<\/p>\n

\nThere are proposals to enhance public spaces in the city centre<\/p>\n

A public consultation for the Draft Limerick City Centre Transport Plan has been launched in conjunction with the Proposed Limerick City Centre Public Realm Strategy.<\/p>\n

That strategy sets out a vision and design for enhancing streets, public spaces and the overall urban environment.<\/p>\n

People are invited to make submissions or observations on either or both proposals up to 12 October.<\/p>\n

Limerick City and County Council will host a drop-in information session where members of the public can learn more about the proposals and discuss them directly with project staff on Thursday 10 September.<\/p>\n
